Was that the first time since the 1980's the hood was opened? Judging by the amount of dirt it sure looks like it.

what is the can thing in the center of the motor by the alternator?ive never seen that on a motor before.

That's the power steering reservoir for the power steering fluid. It has hydroboost brakes.

That's not a little motor. It's an accumulator. Inside that can is a diaphragm with air on one side and hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid) on the other. It gives you three assisted stops after the ps pump stops making pressure (as in you turn the truck off or it dies).
