posi rear questions

how do you tell if a posi is in good shape (clutches and stuff)
its a 12 bolt , 1970 model.
also how do you clean out all the old gunk inside to put in fresh lube without messing stuff up? any ideas?

Parts cleaner or kerosene in a spray bottle and a parts brush for the clean up. I wouldn't spray the clutches too much. If memory serves me... you can check your clutches for wear with both rear wheels off the ground, turn one wheel and have a helper hold a little resistance on the other wheel... both wheels should turn the same direction.
