what is the best way to remove all the caked on crud and surface rust?????
what kind of paint do you use to repaint frame???? and how much does it take and cost??? thx ,red

Sandblasting is the best way to get one truly and thoroughly clean.

For paint, there are several different options. Places like Eastwood sell frame paint in aerosol cans.

My father in law uses Caterpillar tractor black frame paint. It's about 40 bucks a gallon and ready to spray.

Myself, I use urethane paint just like the outside of the body. You can mix it with a flattener agaent to get the right sheen.

I'd say best option would be to powdercoat it, but it can get pricey.

I've had good results cleaning frames with a lot of time, and a 7" angle grinder with a wire wheel.

i am using my little sandblaster to do the inside of my frame rails, and a paint removal wheel on my drill to get the outside and it is coming out very nicely. i`m going to wipe it up with some grease/wax remover and paint it with some eastwood paint i got for $36. i only have a basement garage in my new house so i can`t spray in there without getting everyone light headed. i am applying the paint with a sponge type brush. it looks very smooth and lays out without brush marks.

oh` sorry i didn`t even answer your org. ? i used oven cleaner on the frame and sprayed it off, it took out alot of grease and grime.

I say sandblast it. Takes alot less time!!

Sand blasting is definately the best way, but I've used a pressure washer, drill with wire wheel/sanding disc, and a lot of time
I used Eastwoods Rust encapsulator, and a coat of their Chassis Black

I took mine to the powdercoater and let them sandblast it before they coated it.

I'm really happy with the way everything turned out.

i used a 5" air grinder with 32 grit, then a wire wheel for those hard to reach areas, then painted it using rust stop flat black... looks pretty good, and i really like the all flat black chassis with red accents...

Did they do leaf springs and axles also? Or just frame?

Let's see....I had the following parts blasted/coated.

Frame
Auto trans crossmember
rear trailing arms
front a-arms (upper and lower)
a-arm cross shafts (upper and lower)
72 BB engine mounts
air bag mounting plates and cups
front crossmember
ECE rear shock relocating brackets
ECE extended panhard bar
ECE raised front swaybar brackets
ECE front swaybar
DJM dropped spindles
steering crossbar
disc brake backing plates

That's all I can think of right offhand. But, suffice it to say, I took a ton of dirty, rusty parts into the powdercoater, and came out with nice shiny parts that make it enjoyable to put back together. And it only set me back $450.

Man, I always have been under the impression that powder coated a frame was expensive...I consider $450 cheap seeing they had to clean everything up...

For all that $450 is cheap, they want $ 650 up here to sandblast and powdercoat just the frame, nevermind all those extras
