5 Or 6 Speed Tranny With P.t.o??

HI GUYS.... I'VE GOT A TRANNY QUESTION FOR YA . I'VE GOT A 1969 1 TON TOWTRUCK, WITH A 350/SM465 COMBO. I'VE GOT A FRESH 396 TO DROP IN AS SOON AS THE WEATHER BREAKS, & I WOULD LIKE TO UPDATE THE TRANNY TOO, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KEEP THE GRANNY GEAR AS IT COMES IN HANDY, & THE PTO CAPABUILITY IS A MUST FOR THE WINCH BUT WOUND OUT IN 4TH GEAR, IT FEELS LIKE YOU COULD SHIFT 1 OR 2 MORE TIMES. ANY SUGESTIONS ON WHAT TRUCK HAS THE KIND OF TRANNY I NEED.? JOHN

John,

They are kind of pricey but a Gear Vendors overdrive unit is an option. It will take the power and abuse. (Not that you abuse your wrecker!)

junkyardjohn,

I would love to see a pic of your trans/PTO & how it all hooks together. I've always been curious to see what one actually looks like.

I have an NV4500 ( 5 speed ) in one truck and an NV5600 ( 6 speed ) in another truck. Both have the plates for PTO mounting.

You'd likely be happy with either of them if you find one you can buy for a fair price.

I dont think your current PTO's gear pattern will match up to the newer upgraded trannies...ask a dealer that installs such stuff. I'd bet not.

There are a series of letters and number that mean something to certain pto people that know what there doing. Write en down and tell a PTO rebuild place they will know what the application is.

Code letters mean such things as stud pattern metric or standard, pto is self lubrication or needs to have fluid pumped to it, 2 way type, 1 way type, which direction the pto shaft faces, shaft high or low position, mechamism to activate the pto...it gets interesting if you get someone to supply you a few pages from an old book or new book.

John--- Don't worry about the pto. Whatever tranny you get I can get you a pto for. As long as it has the provision for one.

Overdrive dont come easy , if you are drivin a stick truck! IMO , that 4 spd you have is pretty d@mn tough.....spend the buck, & add the Vendors(pretty much bullet proof combo).....if you have to do her twice, it will cost you just one old mans point of veiw. best of luck, crazyL

I'd like to know what you eventually come up with also...wouldn't mind a 5 or 6 speed in my 72 tow truck either.

The 6 speed is great for towing, always keeping the motor in its peak rpm range, but if you don't tow alot, get a 5 speed. Granny gear and OD are about the same in both but with the 6 you have an extra gear. I have a 6 in my 2001 HD with an 8.1, works great on the trailer...alot of shifting when not. I would think it would be great on the wrecker though John, good luck in the hunt for one!

the NV5600 is a dodge-only transmission, so check on ebay, a dodge forum, or a tranny shop. the 6 speed that GM uses is the ZF S6 650, which Ford also uses.

When I went to install a pto onto the Allison Auto in my 85 GMC 2ton I got the one I needed from a local place that services big trucks and builds beds (Benson Truck Bodies). I have seen straight cut gears and angle cut gears on the pto units. I think that the bolt pattern is common to be 6 bolt pattern. It should be on most trannies light duty and medium duty. The bigger bolt pattern should only be on the big semi type trannies. A neighbor gave me a pto that is 2-speed. I've never seen one before. What would a 2-speed pto be used for?

One example I can think of is to run a PTO winch off of a transmission. Or anything off of a transmission, I guess. Transfer case PTO's speed and direction is controlled by the tranny, and tranny PTO's spin one direction and are controlled by engine RPM...but if you have a 2 speed then you have forward and reverse.

I'll have to look at it again, but I thought it turned the same direction just faster or slower depending on the gear. A forward and reverse makes sense for a pto winch. If you used the 2-speed to drive a hyd pump wouldn't the pump just put out more volume therefor making the equipment that the hyd pump is running (hyd winch or a cylinder) move faster. If I can find it I'll get a pic.

How about an Eaton 2-speed rear axle? It was available in the 60 series trucks and would be really cool on your tow truck. It would up the capacity of the axle to 17,000 lb! I don't know if the gear ratio gets you there though but they were available on lots of the bigger Chev trucks and were electric shift.
