darn toolbox doors!
its common knowledge that the stowage doors rust, i think they are worse than the rockers and cab corners!
my longhorn is almost rust free, or was, i have some normal minor things, but my door! ugh! i had tried fixing it once myself, but im lackin in the body work skills, so now its rusting again.. took it to a body shop. they wanted 400 to redo it.. lol.. wow. so, im on the hunt for a good used one. or a repo. anyone know of any?

In Florida,Pinellas Park,is a guy that produces a composite door.I bought one a few years back.He advertised in Pickups`n`Panels in Print when it and the NationalChevy/GMCTruckAssociation were in existense. He`s a 67-72 truck guy,Dennis`Truck Parts,I`m pretty sure.I have seen him advertise in Hemmings. He had a web-site,but I don`t think I could find it under the name above. It`s some variation of Dennis Trucks if he still has it.I`ll dig-out my old P`n`PiPs.It`s expensive.

Brothers also carries one (with hardware). I believe theirs is fiberglass. I don't see it on the website, but they list it in the mail-out.

We did have the tool box door up to about 2 weeks after our most recent catalog came out when the supplier decided he was not going to make it anymore. Had we been given any notice of the discontinuation of this or any other items, we would not have put them in our catalog. Sorry.

Catalogs go in for print way before they come out.Often a business will list a part anticipating availability, rather that wait`til part-in-hand and another year,or whatever,to list.Don`t know why producer would have jerked it out of production before it got better exposure through the catalog.Jumped the gun,I guess.

That door was being reproduced for a good 2 or 3 years. Just no one was willing to spend that much on a door.

Do you have the door still, The old one that could be used to make a mold?
I have done a bunch of composite fab in the aerospace industry and may be able to make one if it is good enough to get a pattern off of. Can you please post pics of the door and hardware for me. Maybe we could figure out a way to make these doors for the folks who need them Regards, Stace |

Mr Dude might have a good money makin idea here...charge 150 - 200 for the part, and I'd bet a punch in the gut you wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand.

The part is available from Dennischevytruckparts.com.I think you`ll find the time and effort involved in developing and producing one or repairing an original properly(probably re-rust)would warrant the cost.Even though few have survived,it is still a low demand item compared to other body peices.Look at what US Body Source is acking for their fiberglass.Don`t let the size fool you. This peice is worth every penny of the cost of a reproduction cab door.More like a Suburban 3rd door,if such a bird did exist.IMHO,of course

Well,
We just picked up a longbed side panel yesterday with a toolbox hole cut in it but no toolbox or door. I could use that to ensure the fit. I just need pics of the inner compartment, some measurements, a decent door (does not have to be perfect) that has the shape and size of the original and go from there. Anyone willing to give up an old crappy door? Anyone have pics of one of these on a truck including the inside of the box they could email me or post? I do not know how much money could be made since it could be very time consuming just making one depending on the latches and mounting system. Probably why this other company quite making them haha. Regards, Stacey |

Hey Rick,
I have had a little bit of time to think about this but not much. I am looking at making something out of basic marine grade fiberglass sandwiched around a small piece of aluminum which is shaped to the correct contour of the original door. I am staying away from other forms of metal because of rust problems of course. I will need a decent door (does not have to be perfect) to draw a mold off of. I need to see a close-up of the latching system and a close-up of how the door attaches to the beside or toolbox. I am positive I can make the door with the indention for the latch etc. I am not sure how the door latches and how it attaches so I need to see one to ensure I can make it strong enough to last. I know where I can get a door and toolbox that is rusted for a good price... but frankly. I do not know if I would ever use one myself. I currently have a short stepside bed and a longbed but am really focused on making the SS bed the "pretty one". However if it can be done and not cost an arm and a leg I would give it a shot. Could you take some of these close-up pics for me? Latches, attachment points etc. Do you have any pictures of the door on the truck both closed and open? Wish someone from the DFW area had one laying around I could sponge a mold off off as that would be ideal. My email addy is staceybeller@charter.net Thanks Stacey |

Having the door in hand would be ideal. I am looking around here for some good moldmaking material locally.
I will promise that you will get your door back in the same or better shape than I get it. All I will need to do is use some release agent on it prior to building the mold. You would never even know it was used. Let me know Thanks Stacey |

let me know if you need more picts, everything on mine is near perfect other than the door. one thing i have noticed is that the doors dont fit that well. has anyone else noticed that or is it just my truck?
my door would make a good mold i guess, the shape is still there, ist just the rust eating from the inside out.
