Gen III motor guys (LS1 based 4.8/5.3/5.7/6.0): header poll

Seems like now that everyone is discovering these motors they are finding their way into anything and everything that moves. Including our trucks. Because I have a hard time shelling out 800 bucks for a long tube header designed for a 67-72 with a LS1 based motor I am building my own set.

I was wondering if there is any interest in a more affordable header if I was to produce a limited quantity of these? I'd like to know a few things:

1.) A head count of people that are first off, even interested in a set of headers for their LS1 based 67-72 truck, in the near future.
2.) What qualities would make the header most desirable - bearing in mind these will affect cost. (materials like stainless or just heavier guage mild steel)
3.) What is the most you would be willing to pay for a set.


The set I am building for my personal project will be using 1.75" primaries with a 3" collector. Nothing fancy just a nice and thick 3/8" flange for the heads and tig welded. I have the ability to construct a header from any material starting at mild steel even to titanium (bring your wallet).

I made a set of F-body headers fit once but I had to hack them up pretty bad, so I am finally biting the bullet here. Going from manifolds to my previous long tube headers I gained 26 rear wheel horsepower and 22 ft pounds of torque. You should expect that much with these with a good tune.

Let's hear some feedback...

How about 1 3/4" stepped to 1 7/8" with 3 1/2" merge collector. O2 bungs and bungs for egt probes (8). Material to be steel (which I would have ceramic coated inside and out) or stainless. Right now my plans are to build my own or modify a set of Kooks which go for about $960.

Yeah, The kooks are real nice units. I think you will find that they would take alot more modifying than it would be worth, especially since they are already more than 800 bucks. They are also a 3" collector not 3.5" unless they have started that recently?

Oh, so NOW you offer this up, after I've already got my shorties in :P

Depending on the timeframe you'd be doing this in, and the cost of a pair of headers (either coated or uncoated - I can run them right over to JetHot if I need to) I'd be very interested in this.

I'd ideally like to get out the door for the pair of headers and coating for $600 or less. If that can be done, and it can be done reasonably soon (and my mechanic can send back the shorties for at least a majority of a refund, heh) I am DEFINITELY in on this.

There is one picture in my album of the drivers side with the Kooks. I have other pictures showing where they are hitting. They can be gotten in 1 7/8" X 2" X 3 1/2" or the 1 3/4" X 1 7/8" X 3 1/2". Part number 6501-1RHS and 6500-2RHS. The problem with the Kooks as well as with all F-body long tubes (as I'm sure you've found out) is that they have to curve around the lower control arm on the Camaro. So when they are used on a swap into our trucks you end up with the collectors up against the frame and angled out. At least that's what I had with a set of Hooker LT's and the Kooks. I haven't talked to Kooks yet but it shouldn't be impossible for them to modify/build me a set.


And for Project1970, save your money until you can get the LT's. The shorties are not worth the money. If its more for looks then go for it but if your after performance it's not worth the cost plus what your giving up with the LT's.

I ran into the same thing there with F-Body longtubes: the collector goes straight into the frame. Were it not for that, they'd be great.

Yup, that's why I'm working on building a set. If there are only three people interested though I guess it will be a one off thing... sorry.

Hey guys, could you not cut the collectors off the f-body headers & swap them side-to-side so that they would point toward the trans vs. the frame?

F-body headers arent' usually symetrical passenger vs drivers' side, even for shorties.
