I'm looking for some ideas for a simple notch for my '72, this one isn't going to lay frame. I looked at CP's notch, but I really don't feel like spending $149 for it. I want to be able to tow with it (dad is having his 1954 Chris Craft restored and wants to use my burb to tow it) so keeping the strength is a major concern. Anybody got pics or advice?

Yeah I'm gonna call him tomorrow...his usual answer to me is draw it and I'll make it for ya...LOL...guess it's time to do some measuring.

i would have to agree with the pipe and plate method. it looks 1000 times better than the bolt in kits, it should be stronger and the parts should be well under $50 at yor local hardware store or steel supply shop.

for the 67-72, you'll probably want to make your half-pipe a few inches long, then after you tack it in, grind off the excess. The frame is not "square" at the axle line... something the bolt-in notches account for.

I used that bolt-in notch w/o any issues & towed my car trailer. After I started towing more often, I decided to go ahead & weld it in for xtra strength. My truck doesn't lay frame but is dropped between 7-8" in the back. If you have access to a welder, then the round pipe & plate method is cheaper. But, if you want to get it done @ home & don't have a welder, the bolt-in works fine. If done right, the pipe/plate would look better IMO.

Pipe method is good. be sure to use thicker 1/4" pipe. My freind has the pipe method done, on his 66. I have the bolt in notch, not welded in. I've towed a bobcat with a heavy tilt back trailer, behind my blazer with no problems.

what diameter pipe did you all use? i was thinking of 3/16" pipe about 8" in diameter. would that be too big??

you generally want to go about 2 inches bigger in diamater than axle tubling. so with 3 inch axle diameter then 5 inch pipe would work good.

Western Chassis has the half pipe weld in kit similar to the pics above but a tad smaller...Pleanty of room for the axle, but smaller. I bought them 2 weeks ago and will be installing them this weekend. I paid $39 for them. My Brother installed them in his and they look awesome, nice and clean looking.

I would like to use the pipe method shown above and was wondering what the proper location would be on a 67-72 truck seeing how you can't put it directly over the axle as described by XXL because its not square to the axle line.
I would be useing some 5 or 6" pipe.

Yes, you put it directly over the axle C/L. Once installed, the c-notches are parallel to the rear end housing.

For mine, I took the shocks off & the coils out so ther rear end could be raised until it hit the frame. Using a level, I marked the frame for both sides of the axle (front/back). I split that in half & regarded that as my axle C/L & scribed a line on the top, bottom, & outside of the framerail for easy visual reference.

I then measured & scribed the C/L of the c-notch itself, aligned the 2 scribe marks together, & traced the area that needed to be cut out.

The difference on yours will be the need to cut the width of the c-notch longer because the frame staggers vs. being straight. Once it's welded in, simply trim off the excess from both the inside/outside of the frame.

FWIW, if I would have followed the instructions that came w/my bolt-in c-notch kit, the notch would not have been centered because the instructions had you measure from a factory hole on the side of the frame when determining the C/L for the c-notch. My measurement indicated it would have been almost 1" off center.

is your frame boxed at the notch n2trux? it's hard to tell if it is or not in the pics, but I like how the outside of the frame rail looks stock without any extra plate. how was it done?
