what have I got? 87 Jimmy 4x4 4 speed tranny

Anybody know what transmission came in an 87 Jimmy 4x4 (manual 4 speed)? I read on Chucks Truck pages it might be an M20 Muncie??? I thought it should be an SM465 or something, but weren't those on older trucks?? Thanks!

If it is factory, it is a sm465 with hydraulic clutch which seems to be rather valuable( $200-$300)for just the hydro stuff. I am in process of changing my '87 from auto to hydraulic sm465 and this stuff is not real easy to come up with.

Thanks Ed. I just agreed to sell the clutch fluid reservoir and hoses (one is broken) and the flywheel dustcover (between bellhousing and oil pan) for $20 to a member on this board. Apparently he's already got the master and slave clutch cylinders... Does that sound like a fair price to you? I already committed, but it would be nice to know what you think. I would like to try and sell the tranny and possibly the cylinders. Thank you!

M20 was the code for alot of GM transmissions, but as far as a 4x4 goes, M20 = SM465.

What do you guys figure the tranny is worth? I would guess it needs to be rebuilt. Edman, did you say the hydro setup itself was worth $200-$300? You mean the clutch master and slave cylinders, reservoir and lines? Thank you again for your help.

The real value is in the bellhousing and pedals, mainly bellhousing. Most other parts can be had at any local parts house. Pedals and bellhousing are out of productio by several years. I have seen the complete setup sell for $200 -$300- that being bellhousing, master and slave, hoses and usually pedals. $20 for dust cover and resoivoir is fair on both parts. The older style pedals can be modified to accept hydraulic master, so many people are not real interested in them. If you were to sell transmission and bellhousing out of a driving vehicle, I would expect $400-$500 depending on condition(mileage-wear etc.), throw in the transfer case and adapter and the value would go up by about $150. The master and slave are good for about $40, maybe, but most people that are going to the trouble of doing a complete swap will put in new parts as reliability of new parts is not worth the few $ you wou save by installing these used. BTW, why are you stripping this? Post up whats left and maybe a couple of pics and you could probably make afew bucks, might be interested in somthing myself. Hope this helps, not a price bible but what I have seen myself while gathering my parts for a full drivetrain swap.

Hi Ed, thanks for the info. The transfer case blew apart on this truck, which was a daily driver up until two years ago, when it became a plow vehicle for my friend at work. Then the rear end started making noise and he bought another plow truck. I bought if off him to steal the motor (350 TBI) for my 3/4 ton truck. I would much rather have the use of a pickup, and have a lot of good parts to make a nice driver/plow truck. Maybe even horse around in the mud a bit. I will take some pictures tomorrow morning if I can. I still have the bellhousing, and xfer adapter (I believe). The transfer case is GONE. Half of it is missing, the rest I threw in the rear and when the truck goes to the scrapyard, it will too. Ha ha ha. If there's anything special you want pics of, please just let me know. I would be happy to give you a good price. Thank you.

parts pictures

here are some pictures of the parts I have from the standard shift 87 Jimmy 4x4 I stripped. Please let me know if you need anything further.

I have a SM465 with the bellhousing and xfer case adapter, and a bunch of other parts I need to clean up for sale. Thanks!

more pics

more parts!! there's a pic of the engine I pulled to rebuild and stuff in my 87 K20, with 1 ton drivetrain. I've got a dana 60 front, 14bolt full floater rear, NP205 and a TH400. Should be good for plowing and dump runs, raising hell, etc.

Didn't realize that it was your post that I replied to. Guess I answered my own question, been looking for a good pic of that clutch master, thanks.

HI Ed. The Jimmy is gone, but I do have a high resolution shot from the front, I should be able to zoom in and get the firewall for you, possibly tonight. Thanks!

Thanks, those pics actually help a lot. I was just trying to see if clutch master holes were where I thought they were. Mine are covered with some kind of plastic filler and paint from factory.
