79 gmc c/k25 front end
I am just getting in to 4-wheeling, and I have bought a truck. It is a 1979 gmc 2500. I want to know what my front end is, and I would like to know my rear end. I have been told that it is maybe Dana 44, but I don't know. Thanks for your help just trying to get started. Also if anyone has any good ideas for this truck I would appreciate them too. Thanks, Matthew

Front is either a D44 or a 10bolt as 79 was the transistion period from the D44 to 10B. Rear axle will be a 14FF. This is assuming everything is still factory. D44 and 10B are nearly identical.

A full floating axle has a hub and two bearings on a spindle per side much like the front axle and the drive axle bolts into the hub. A semi float axle has only 1 bearing per side and the axle shaft rides on this bearing and moves the vehicle. The benefit of the FF design is that the hub holds the weight and the axle shaft only moves the vehicle. The SF design means the axle shaft suports the weight of the vehicle and moves it also. The "14 bolt" refers to the size, and it is a very stout axle.
Here is a pic of a Dana 44, look at the cover for comparison to what you have. The D44 cover is flat on the left and right edges, the 10 bolt has a more round cover. |
