3 on tree to three on floor?
Is it worth it? Does it help you shift without hanging up? I'm thinking about it, but if it feels the same only on the floor, then its not much improvement.

It's been a few years since I've changed one over, but I have switched 3 trucks and a '49 Chevy coupe over to floor shifts, and every one of them was an improvement. Never had a floor shift hang up, but a friend of mine did because he put a cheapie in.

I converted my 3-on-the-tree to a floor shift using the Hurst Indy 3 Speed Pickup floorshift. It is fantastic! I am so happy with it, the shifter is such nice quality! It allows you to easily adjust for shorter/longer throws, and was very simple to install. I did it in a couple of hours! I highly recommend this product. Hurst makes great shifters.

I have a Hurst Indy in my 72. The guy I bought the truck from put it in because the column linkage was shot. I'm not real fond of it because it feels sloppy and rattles above 55 mph. It will sometimes hang between first and second if I don't shift very carefully. If I follow the "H" pattern, no problems, but if I try to quick shift straight fron 1st to 2nd it hangs and I have to get underneath and take it out of gear. Takes the fun out of hot rod take-offs.

Now I'm torn on whether or not to do my conversion to a floor shift. Mine is just going to be for cruisin around and hauling materials, so I really don't need a bigger tranny. I figured going to a floor shift would eliminate all chances of hang ups on a 3 speed. Mine always jams in the knuckles it seems, but I hear that can be attributed to sloppy bushings at the tranny. If I replace the bushings and then put in the floor shift kit, should that eliminate the hang ups?

Put all the parts together and rebuild the colume, it's not that hard to do. I got my stuff from LMC to do my auto colume

You rebuilt the 3 speed column? How much did it cost for all the bushings and spacers and such?

When the truck was my daily driver, I switched from the Coulmn 3spd to a 4spd on the floor (out of practical necessity) and left the bench seat and made a shift lever to fit.
Now that it's not a daily driver anymore, I'm probably going to put it back to s-t-o-c-k since it's the only thing that isn't.

sorry for whoring this thread but I thought it would pertain to it.
My dad's truck is 3 on the floor but it shifts backwards. First is upper right then you shift lower left to 2nd and then up upper left to 3rd. Reverse is lower right. At first I thought wtf? Just wanted to know if you put a 3 on the floor that the shifting would be different? jay

I have a what I believe is a Hurst shifter in mine and I also have the shorter 3 spd trans. My shift pattern is 1st: up & left, 2nd: down & right, 3rd: up & right. I think I swapped bracketry around and even put one on backwards to make it shift this way. I dunno, I did this years ago. But it's true-you have to be carefull with the shifting as it can jam up too!

I like the 3 in the tree! Sure mine binds up every once in a while, but it's great! Makes room for my cup holder/storage container, need somewhere to put the coffee in the morn'.
