Exclamation HEI Parts (Boneyard Run)

I'm going to the boneyard today. I'm gonna attemp the HEI setup and need to know what all I need. I'm new with this and dont fully understand what this all entails. Actually what does HEI stand for Does somebody have instructions that I could look at or a website to direct me to. I really appreciate all of your help.

--Oh, I can look for parts for any of ya. Let me know what you need. I'll also make a list of what they've got at the yard. You can never have too many parts!!!

I believe HEI stands for High Energy Ignition. There should be an article posted in the FAQ section I think. Just remembered i saved it, so here ya are. Hope this helps.

Get the plug that plugs into the "bat" and "tach". You can replace the internal connector, but I cannot find new plugs.

The internal connector for those plastic GM connections is NAPA part number 725145 or 725147. One of those part numbers is the male connector, the other is a female. For your HEI connections you'll need the female connectors to fix up the plugs from the junk yard. One time at a GM dealership a mechanic sold me parts and grabbed a new plastic plug and metal connector out of his tool box. If I knew then what I know now I would have grabbed the part number for the plastic part too.

Since somebody posted those NAPA part numbers on this forum I've had the nicest looking connectors around. With them you can run the correct length and color wire for what you are working on. No splices. No tape. Just like GM had it.

So I just got back from the parts store. I could't find what I needed at the boneyard and went to four different stores. Every one of them told me that what I wanted to do wouldn't work. But they told me that If I bought a totally new HEI distributor that it would. I got an MSD priced at $96 and an ACCEL priced at $89. What do you think I should do?

That's a 25-50 dollar distributor on the parts board.

You could place a want to buy ad there and have a response before bed time tonight..

just buy a stock one unless you plan on racing...any old car will work as long as it looks like the ones pictured...all you need to do is install it and run hot wire to it with a fuse...

I think I found an accel for $35. It came off a 350. I just wonder if I will need anything else besides the distributor. It comes with the accel coil and accel wires. It's used though, but tht really dont bother me. For $35 bucks I think I'll just replace the whole thing.
