I broke my heater control

yesterday it was pretty cold when i first fired up my truck, went to turn on the heater fan and the lever broke in half. Heres the question, are these easily repaired or should i just find another one?

I've done that before, it sucks. I think you can buy new arms. I took a crappy lookin plain jain flat black one and repaired my chrome "delux" one with it. I think it took me an hour to get it all out, take it apart, put it back together and get it back in. There's a pin that holds the arms in the assembly. I can't remember all that was involved, but once you look at it, and if you have a parts donor, it should be fairly simple to figure out. I "fixed" mine 'cause it had nice crome and stuff, I didn't like the flat black one I had. It's easier if you have another to swap out. Like I said, I also think you can buy the arms. I'm pretty sure I've seen them in LMC but I'd check our board vendors first. Good luck

Heater fix-no problem

I just ordered a complete rebuild kit for my '70 for $22. It includes a new fac, all levers and knobs. For that price you can't go wrong. The price is for a non AC heater controller kit. Check out all the onlines but look at Chevy Duty as they have the pics and descriptions.

That kit Nick is talking about is made by Old Air Products. They call it the "never pop levers". They are made out of better material than the stockers were.

I've used that kit many times. With a few hours of detail work and the kit, you can have an absolutely brand new looking and working control head.

It's money well spent and a very gratifying project too.

I'd say repair it..careful how you get those other 2 knobs off or you'll be needing 3 levers. You'll have to pull the other two apart to get the replacement lever in. I broke a few before I figured how I manage to do it..I use a set of bent needle nose and try to pop off the knob straight or use the tips of the needle nose to straddle the shaft and pry a little each way to loosen it up and pop it off. I'm not grabbing the knob its self, I'm prying underneath it.

Not to hijack but does anybody have a pic of the controls. I dont have any labels on mine, and since we're on the subject, I couldnt miss a good oportunity to not start a worthless thread.

This is why GM included a replacement lever with your truck, yes there is/was a new lever on top of the heater control unit held in place by a spring clip. The originals are pot metal and break easily so go with the Old Air rebuild kit. It has steel levers and is well made. The instructions with my kit said to buy a can of paint (brand and part no. of paint included) to renew the face. Mine looks like new now. Save the old unbroken levers and put a spare in the spring clip for emergencies.

Re: I broke my heater control

I see that they offer both a rebuild kit and a complete assembly:

A question for anyone that's rebuilt these things in the past: is it worth the extra $60 to just replace the whole assembly rather than disassemble the existing one?

Not in my opinion. It's a very easy mod to do using the kit. Plus the new style heater assembly doesn't have the same visual appearance for the lense lighting that the old style does.

Unless the bezel is severely corroded, I wouldn't replace it.

Mine, the rivets that hold the bezel to the steel backing plate had broken, so I put new levers on it, new face sticker, and used JB Weld to hold it all together. Looks like new and works perfect.

I couldn't see paying that much if I could fix what I had.
