Drive shaft questions 700r4 swap
I have a 70' SWB with a manual tranny (4 on the floor, 1st is a granny gear). It is a city truck and will never see too much harsh duty. Decided that a 700r4 was the route to go. I picked up a Bowtie overdrives transmission and getting ready to do the swap. What type of issues can I expect with the drive shaft? Is there any existing driveshafts that will work? Should I just try and have mine shortened, or maybe just scrap it all together and have a new one-peice made?

you will have to have the shaft cut. any good driveshaft shop will shorten it and install all new ujoints and carrier berring for around $200. for the trans install look in the f.a.q. board.

First of all, your driveshaf yoke on the four speed has a different number of splines. the bowtie tranny will have either thirty or twenty seven splines, probably 27. so you will need to get a new yoke for that. dont plan on getting one from a junyard either. at least where i am from no one wanted to part with just a yoke unless i was buyng the whole tranny, so you will probably end up spending about 70 bucks for a new one. you should also ask the shop you are going to have shorten your drive shaft how they want you to measure the new distance before you take it to them (just to save some time) other than that, everything should bolt up again without any problems. if you have any more questions, feel free to pm me or email me as i just did this swap over my christmas break.

I just had my '77's driveshaft shortened for a T400 to 700R swap.
Shorten shaft, new u-joints, new 700 yoke, and balanced was $295. SC
