paper clip

how dangerous is it to have a paper clip in where the fuse for the horn goes?.. the porblem is that every time I honk the horn it blows a fuse. I plan on geting it fixed but at the moment do not know how and just want it to work temperaroly(sp?).matt

well its not a good idea since the wire somewhere else in the harness is going to heat up and possibly do a lot more damage than whats already done. I guess its a fire hazard.. My advice, use your finger until the horn is fixed

Better yet, use a .22 caliber bullit. It will let you know when it goes bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JUST A JOKE, DO NOT TRY AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Find the cause of the blown fuse, fix it......................................alot easier said than done.

Check the horn relay, maybe a bad ground. Wires usually never go bad, usually an end or connection.

Just my .02

My horn did that too, wound up being a short in the column.

I have a 63 GMC 3 ton down south, and before I fired it up and checked to see if it was up to spec electrically. I was shocked to find that every single fuse had been replaced with a pair of spent .22 housings back to back... Man, talk about a fire hazard, lol

Don't do it.
A previous beater I had suffered a dash electrical fire as a result of my friend's bone head electrical repair. It's amazing how quickly the cab fills with smoke once the electrical system starts burning. Once it starts, you are typically scr**ed, it will likely take out every related connection.

If the underhood harness lights off you might be one of those lucky people standing on the side of the road watching your ride burn to the ground. I think hollering and hand gestures would be a reasonable alternative until you get the problem resolved.

yup I honked the horn like 2-3 times went in side thinking "sure theres a chance of fire but it WORKS" went back out some time after to go to the store and I pressed the button and smelled this burning/melting smell and thought "OH NO!" looked under there and theres nothing left except little pices of the paper clip that are sticking out from the blade connecter LOL good thing I sopose. its better to lose a paper clip then my truck oh well I guess its back to pretending I have a horn LOL... or better yet I could always buy one of thoes portable horns LOL

Check the 12v cigarette lighter, radio, and horn. If I remember correctly, they're all on the same circuit/fuse. I've accidentally blown the fuse with the power plug for the cell phone, CB, etc.

Good luck!

P.S. It had to do with the "tangs" down in the 12V cigarette lighter socket being shorted out by pushing the "new style" 12V plugs down too far into the socket.
