71 K20 Pics

Just drove up and picked up my new pick-up...

From Indianapolis area to just south of the Green Bay WI area. Good haul but worth it I hope!!!

What I have is a 1971 Chevy K20 4x4. Rebuilt engine has approx. 10,000 miles on it and runs pretty strong. Everything works so far. Body is pretty badly rotted but looks like all the metal is avalible. Needs front end work, tires and an overall clean up/tune up. Paid $750 and cost about 120 in gas to get it. So for about 850 this is what I got.

Per the glove box sticker is came with;

F60 & G50...Heavy duty springs front and rear.
M49............Turbo Hydro automatic
A28.............Sliding rear window ( not there now)
F76.............Locking front hubs
LS9.............Engine
253.............Ammeter, Oil temp and battery volts guages
600.............Black vinyl trim

Has power steering and power brakes with disks on front, but not sure where to tell if they are factory.

Overall I think it was a fair price.

I'll be working on it soon to use as a driver/work truck. Any ideas on what I should look at or change to make the truck mechanically strong or at least dependable. Once I get the mechanics trustworthy I'll try to start on the cosmetics.

Thanks...

71 was first year for disc, so your good there.
You could go through all the mechanicals, sounds like the motor is ok, do tune up. Replace tranny filter. Check ball joints/bearings. Top off/check transfer case, both axles fluid. inspect brakes and fluid.

Pretty truck!!! Thanks for the tip on the rust spots, I'm just planning on keeping in one piece and patching the big holes for now. Have a buddy with a parts 72 C10 with some better metal than mine. I'll probably make a deal with him and salvage what's good. Did you use complete body parts IE...fenders, doors, bed. Or did you weld in replacement panels? I'm not much of a welder but I figure if I wanted to make it rust free I'd get pretty good!!! I also need a manual to cover the whole truck, whats your favorite? I think I've seen the factory repros for about $25, but I'd like to know which one is best.

Thanks for any and all tips. I'm sure I'll have bunches of questions when I get into it!!!

my original bed was the only item i replaced. i couldnt pass up an AZ bed from CPNE. the rest of the body was what came with the truck. i should of got new doors - i found out mine were alot worse then they looked.
as far as doing bodywork on these trucks, they came with 20 gauge sheetmetal so patch panels are easier than other cars. the paint and body forum on the board will be able to answer any questions you have.

Was poking around under the hood looking for items that may need immediate attention and had a pleasant discovery.

A pair of Hedmam headers!!! Kinda rusty but so is the rest of the truck...

Bonus!!!

3quartertime is teasing me. my truck was alot more fun when i could play around with it and not worry about the paint. he can have alot more relaxed fun than i ever will.
the slider came with the truck, i think you can get it from almost any vendor on the board that sells glass.
