Getting steering knuckles off D44?
Ran a search, most of the info was for 2bys. I was under the impression that the ball joints would have to be removed before the steering knuckle could be removed. Now it sounds like I can remove the knuckles with the ball joints in place?
I haven't gotten under it yet to really take a look, and I have never changed ball joints on a solid axle (upper/lower control arms only). I am sure someone has done this. I already have Moog M2 Uppers/Lowers on the way. I would much rather take the knuckles to a shop for the press work. Thanks...

If I remember correctly, the lower has a castle nut and cotter key, the upper has a nut and also a snap ring on the outside of the knuckle. The lower may also. Don't remember. Remove the nuts and the knuckle comes up and off.

The knuckle/ball joint assembly goes down to come off. There is a snap ring inside the knuckle on the upper ball joint (maybe sometimes the lower one has one too). The snap ring only needs to come off the separate the ball joint from the knuckle. The ball joints are primarily held be a press fit into the knuckle (from the top down).

He is wanting to remove the ball joints so regardless of up or down, remove the nuts to remove the knuckle and then proceed from there. I am doing this tomorrow and the front end is on the stands. Just could not remember here in the house if it was right side up or not. Guess I will know this for sure in the morning. Good luck.

reminder leave one of the balljoint nuts on a thread or two when seperating the steering knuckle from axle, don't want it to land in your lap. I'm going to assume the spindles are off and the axleshafts have been removed from the axle?
