700R4 install questions
I just bought a 700R4 tranny and have a couple of questions. As far as installing it seems pretty simple, drop old one and move crossmember back and put the new one in, cut driveshaft and its in. Next I have seen the lockup kits,seem pretty simple and the TV cable adjustment. My truck has a power glide tranny now and from what I understand I should be able to use the steering column, I just will only have Drive and Overdrive, which is fine as long as it will downshift correctly.Do I need to check anything on the 700R4 before installing it ? It came from a wrecked 89 IROC Camaro, it was rebuilt and used for only 2 weeks, has clean fluid and new torque converter. Thanks for the help, I am ready to do this !

if it's as new as you say it is, there's not much to check, other than maybe that the various gaskets and seals are not damaged or leaking... the real test comes on the test drive...

On my truck the lip of the crossmember hid the rear pan bolts on the tranny. I redrilled the the transmission mount bolts to move the cross member back in relation to the transmission to allow some clearance. Other people I think just chop off the lip on the cross member. Something for you to think about.

There is one other option on the lock-up, my trans tech removed the elect servo on the valve body and inserted a check ball, this will lock up the converter at approx 60 mph with no electrical connections required.This is what he told me , I havent had the oppertunity to go on a long trip to possitively test it out though.

Thanks for the info guys, When I look at these different wireing kits, do I need to prewire the tranny or should it already be able to accept it ? Bad69, how can you test it to see if its locked up ? I assume your tranny will shift into overdrive before 60 mph , it just won't be locked up ? If so that should work fine for me also.

I never had a problem with the install. You will need to drill 2 new holes per side on the bottom and your just out of luck on the top cause it's not possible to drill new holes there. The only other problem I can think of is the lip of the floor/firewall could hit the tranny.Someone had that problem. Not a big problem though and I would not worry about it. You will need to get the driveshaft either cut shorter or a New1 piece unit. It's pretty easy on these trucks. Oh and you will need the correct bracket for your T.V cable Make sur eyou have somone adjust it correctly. I am not too sure the problems We will have with the P R N D 3 2 1 stuff I think we will be missing 1st if anything. I have yet to install my steering coloum.

In my 84 the lockup works in 2nd gear. I have a switch on the dash so I can turn it off. I don't like the lock up in 2 and 3 gear. I will have too look at the kit's avaible hopefully I can find one that only allows 4th gear lockup. You don't need to have any wiring to the tranny to drive it you just will not have the lock up working. Not harm to the tranny just a few more rpm's turning on the motor.

I was in the Zine store today and I saw you truck on the cover. I open it up and find a feature of N2TRUX That' s totally awesoeme. It must feel great to have your truck in a zine all across the country and having 10 year old kids saying "Thats the kind of truck I am goign to build" It's great motivation and it's a truck that is some what in reach. They can start with the stock add the drop kit and do a bit of body work. It's a good starting point and they can work there way up to having a trucksimilar to yours ans doing little thing to make it there own. Not many of them could go out and get a 2000's truck and start ripping it apart. I really hope I could get the 67 I am building it a Zine one day it what I have dreamed about for the past 5 years. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php3?t=33266 my fear with the 700r4 install & your powerglide column setup is that you must set the tv cable initially. to know that you have the propper tension on the tv cable, you put it into manual second & mat it. IF it kicks down into 1st, then you know it was set right. Your column wont go there (manual second) so you'll have to do all kinds of potentially damaging playing around with the tv setup. I would suggest getting a new shifter. I just dropped 1100.00 on a seriously hopped up 700r4 for my daily driver BelAir & I think it'll be good. As you'll see in the faq's section, I use the Painless Wiring lock up kit & it works very well & removes any guesswork. You test lock up by cruising along at highway speed & while still applying the gas normally, lightly apply the brake. This assumes you have put a brake un-lock switch inline with your wiring. You will see on your tach the motor jump up 3 or 4 hundred rpm when the conveter unlocks. Also RShaips, install a transcooler inline with your rad. 700's are sensative to too much heat... this is my third 700 in my car so if you have any questions, feel free to pm me or reply here.

They offer a couple of different wireing kits. I am not sure which one I need. I have a 383 Stroker motor and I am not going to do any towing with this truck , it is just my toy. I would like the lower gear and overdrive for driveability purposes, I do not need to lockup the torque converter unless I am on the highway. Thanks
