How do you check the brake booster? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This is not on my 68 chevy but on my 182 ton 01 sierra. How would you check to see if the booster is working ok? I just did a brake job but it feels like there is no booster there at all. Was the same way before the brake job to.

All the ones that I have ever had to go bad make a hissing or sucking sound,you might check your vac line from the manifold to the booster for cracks and leaks.

Its not hissing and also it is not hard either. Forgot to mention that. Could it be the master cylinder? What are the symptoms of a master cylinder going out?

I always just pull the booster vacuum line and if the truck stays running then it is probably bad

To check the booster....

With key off, pump the pedal a couple of times and it should firm up. Hold your foot on the pedal and start the truck. The pedal should fall about .5 inch.

If the booster does this then it should be ok for its designed assist. Mine checked out but would not stop the truck. I ended up buying a dual diaphram booster.

usually leaking or wont make a pedal.You might try unhooking the vac line and check to see you have good vac,try your pedal with and without the vac line hooked up see any difference.
