It still wont start!!!

Several months ago i purchased a 82 gmc high sierra short step, it has a 350 with 4 in floor, i was driving it one day to see if i hooked the speedo cable correctly and it died on me, exactly like it ran out of gas (no surprise my gas guage is broken). I go get gas and fill it all the way and try it again, NOTHING. after listening to my father in law i poured a little gas in the carb and it started for just a second and we realized that when the gas was poured in that it was leaking out the side of the carb. So i have had the carb rebuilt and a new batt cause the other died and new batt cables. i hook it all up and i have no power to the truck. no headlight, nothing. Could the starter be at fault. i tested the batt and it is fine. i checked the ground, and the connections. i asked an auto store guy about the proper connections to the starter and this is what he told me, there will be three wires, one big(to battery) and two small, but the 2 small will be together on one connector. so the big goes to the big bolt and the small wires go to the small bolt. But i have a total of 4 wires, one big, two small on one connector, and one small. he told me to splice all the small together and put on one bolt and the big on the big bolt. STILL DOESNT WORK!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!! sorry so long.

Yeah or neh. I would try what 1FastC10 suggested. Before it died did you notice any problems or anything out of the ordinary or was it just running normal?

One big: battery cable?
two small on one connector: power leads to fuse box
one small: lead fron ignition "start" to solenoid terminal on starter

Undo the "2 small in 1" and put it on the stud with the battery cable where it's supposed to be......

um- the big one goes in the obvious spot... there should be a second wire hanging down there that has a fairly large eyelet and that connects to the same post as the battery cable.. the truck is powered from that very connection... it goes up to the alternator/bulkhead/orsomething... the other two small ones go on one of the small connectors.. each of the small connectors on the starter are labeled.. damn i forget cuz its been a year or so since i hooked one up.. i think "I" and "S" or something? try one, if it doesnt work, switch it to the other.. its the signal from the key to engage the solenoid and crank... but when you hook the two big ones up to the same terminal, your truck will have power.. (headlights)

Have you checked to make sure gas is getting to the carb via the fuel pump? Worth a check since you said it started when gas was poured into the carb for a second.

The smaller wire(s) go to the small post with the "S" beside it. I have also seen two wire go to the larger post where the battery cable goes to.
