Ash Tray Modification
I removed the front off my ashtray and had it powdercoated. Now I am looking for a way to mount it on a springed hinge so the former ashtray area can be used to hide switches or ???? I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to hinge it? Thanks

Maybe it would be more easy to put a regular hinge on the bottom and to secure a maganet inside at the top of the opening. I havent ever tried it but its just a thought anyway.

How about welding in a piece of alum. in the middle of the ashtray and drilling holes for switches, then put a plate over the top to cover the wires. Basically you pull it out - then operate the switches etc & everthing would be covered up. Just an idea. Good Luck !

cool idea !!! that would be a great place to hide the controller
for a cd changer !!!!!!! oh and if you just wanted to make a storage compartment out of the old ashtray hole i think that the liner from the little cubby hole in a late chevy truck would be cool.

It probably wouldn't take that much of a spring. I'd hit the junk yard and check out some of the cup holders with lids on them (my '97 Honda Civic has a spring hinged lid over the cup holders.) Of course, that spring is to pop it open not keep it closed.

I was thinking about putting my electric trailer brake control in there.

Probably depends how much towing you do but id leave your brake controller out in the open where its easy to get at. Most controllers have a trailer brake only lever this can get you out of hairy situations. EJ

Actually with the cover open, the brake control would be easily accesable. Just as accesable as someone putting out a cigarette if there was still an ashtray there
