There are lots of different EFI options out there. Tons of aftermarket setups made by companies like Edelbrock or Holley, and of course, the OEM EFI setups. Personally, I plan to run a tuned port fuel injection setup on my truck. I've got everything I need to install it, just gotta break my engine in first, and get the body back on the truck.

For a higher performance engine like a 383, you need something that is gonna be able to breath well enough for it. There are a couple different options. First is an aftermarket TBI setup, many of them flow extremely well, and are easy to install, and just generally good systems. If you want to go a bit more exotic, you can get yourself a tuned port setup, either aftermarket or OEM.

If you decide to go OEM, you will need to replace the intake with something that flows a bit better. There are the aftermarket intakes such as the SuperRam intake, or you can buy an LT1 intake, send it to the fellow at LT1intake.com and get it machined to fit your small block. A stock intake will run out of breath at about 4800 rpm on a stock 350, it'll run out even sooner on a 383. An LT1 intake compares extremely well with all the other different intake options out there, but is much cheaper.

Personally, when I upgrade my EFI setup, I plan to go the LT1 intake direction, it looks cleaner, and performs well beyond what my 355 will ever need.

I'm running Edelbrocks Pro-Flo MPI and so far I'm happy with it.
EFI is great! I've had the system for about 3 years and it was one of the only full systems out back then.
Now there are a lot more options available. The new Holley Stealth Ram is really nice and isn't much more than the Edelbrock system.
The Stealth Ram is programmed with a laptop and the Edelbrock has a little hand held program module.
If you like to tinker with things the Stealth Ram and it's programming is the way to go.
The Edelbrock is very limited in it's parameters.
Look at the stock units also. Street and performance has some nice stock systems as well as these folks http://www.fuelinjection.com/

I've also heard that the stock systems poop out around 4500 (for, say a 400 or 383). But I think you'll have to install a lot of crap regardless. As far as the crap: ECU, high pressure fuel pump, newer dizzy. I may have missed some things.

I'm thinking about throwing one in mine in about 2 years (It'll take that long to fill up the jar & 'til then let's just say it's not high on my list.)

This might also be a good question for the "Engine & Drivetrain" list.

I've got efi on my 84 K10. I'm using a GM Performance Parts Ramjet intake on a 355 I built about 6 years ago.

Take a look at this thread:

I've also put a writeup on my web page.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

I am building a EFI ITI system from a converted Hilborn setup for my BBC.

For the simplest system you can't beat the TBI setup.

I don't think TBI will support a 383 it's to restrictive.

Im runnin' TPI on my truck but my eng. is stock. TPI can support a 383 but if you plan on running a large cam forget it you will never get it to run right or idle with out alot of high tech programming and tweaking and it sounds like you dont want to fool with it that much.

As long as you don't go overboard it should be fine (upper limit of 320hp). IE restrict the cam profile to about .420 If you get out of hand, you will need to boost the fuel pressure and do some chip tuning.

TBI setup for about a 1G: http://www.customefis.com/pontiac.html

There are a number of engine builders that make 383's for TBI setup.
example: http://www.high-performance-engines.com/spc1.html

If you are looking at making power over and above 350, then I agree, TBI isn't a good idea.
