change to V8 and keep 3speed

Okay, now I'm confused. I have a 67, 3speed, 292. I want to change out to a V8. Some of you say keep the 3speed in the same spot, mount the 8cyl in the 6cyl holes, therefore I don't have to mess with the driveshaft. But WAIT! Assuming I can't use my Zbar now from 6cyl now I have to get one off a V8 motor but then the spot in the frame for the V8 Zbar would be off in 6cy positon. Right?
So do I mount everything in the 8cyl positon then get a different front driveshaft?
Or will the Zbar from the V8 fit in I-6 zbar postion?
Please help. This is getting confusing. David

I changed mine over from a 6 to a 8, in my opinion the best thing to do is change everything, I moved mine up to the 8 holes, got the right z bar, extended the driveshaft, get the proper steel mounts for the motor mounts, now on mine i had to get a different crossmember to move the trans up, the 6 trans crossmember and 1 I found in a yard for a 8 truck were different, I am very happy with the results, if you leave it in the 6 holes the engine will be close to the firewall, I dont like that, the only way anyone can tell my truck was a 6 truck is to look at the vin,,,,,,,If im right the z bar wont work at all, If I recall the z bar for a 6 is longer than the 8......

So, does anyone have a V8 zbar and the tranny mount for the 67-72 that has changed out to automatic? If they didn't just throw it away....

I've always reused the 6 cylinder z-bar and screwed a pivot ball into the V8 engine.

with a 292 equipped truck, you will need to swap the rh frame stand , to mount in the I6 (250) spot. the 292 has staggered stands. for me, i use the V8 Zbar & top rod, with a screw in ball in the FOWARD hole in the block. the bottom rod will need to be adjusted, & the hloes redrilled in the frame (for the outter bracket), to get the Z bar pretty much perpendicular to the eng block. set up like this, you can run the rams horns, or opt for a 69090 set of hedmans......i think the Hooker comps will also fit, but my setup is a little different than the norm.....69L

When I swapped a V8 into inline position, I also used a screw in ball pivot, rather than the bolt-on-with-2 bolts normal V8 one. I used the Hooker comps too, no problems.

My truck, I used the I6 z-bar too though. Seems like I may have bent one of the arms with a prybar to make everything line up though. But, it was definitely the I6 z-bar
