I swear I'm either losing my mind or the delusion that I had one at one point...I thought I asked this but can't find it now...so forgive me for asking it again if that's the case.

I have gas that spills out the gas tank that's behind the seat when its full and the truck is toss back and forth. it has a locking gas cap. I've tried another standard locking cap and it still leaks. it's definitely leaking where the gas cap seats. does anyone else have this problem and have you found a solution?

yeah i'd like to move the tank but that's not going to happen so i need to have a cap that can keep the fuel in...and i'd like it to lock.

I would try taking a straight edge and see if your filler neck has a dent or an area lower than the rest. And if it does, see if you can straighten it out.

I've learned to not put as much in my tank either - sad seeing it sloshing out all over the place. Very soon I'm going to get the tank made that will sit on my flatbed near the headache rack. Then my problems will be solved.

I have the same problem. Tried several new caps. I just try to stop it at about 3/4 tank. Wish someone had an answer.

Same &#&&%#$5 problem, same types of band-aid fixes. This is what I did.....I put a thick bead of RTV along the rubber seal of the cap, let it set up, and since have had no problems.

I had the same problem, when my tank was full and I parked in my driveway butt first it would leak but if I parked face first it wouldn't, my diveway sloped down. Easy enough, face first, problem solved LOL.

My 71 has vent tubing that used to go to a canister but the canister is missing. Someone plugged the tube so there was no where for the pressure to vent. The result was gas fumes coming out of the cap. I unplugged the vent tube and bought the right cap for a 71 and no more problems.

I'm not saying that this is evryones problem, However, I went through this problem after installing a new gas tank. Went into NAPA auto parts and told them what year. They gave me a cap. We went out to check the fit on the truck, and it was loose. We tried the second PT# they recomended, and it was loose. We finally just started trying on caps until we found the correct one. It ended up being a PT# that there computer didn't even recomend. Bottom line... Try a new Non locking cap. Sorry I didn't keep the pt#. Darren

Use non-locking stant gas caps and in some cases over the years of putting on and taking off the gas cap the inner ring wears down, in this case stop at your local parts store walk in with gas cap hand it to the guy behind the counter and tell him you want either a rubber or fiber gasket ring that fits the outer ring surrounding the center section on your gas cap bottom side outer sealing edge, now take and slide it under the tabs on bottom of cap and reinstall. This .15 gasket thats 1/32"-1/16" thick gasket will be enough to keep your gas in the tank when full and cornering to the right at high speeds where it belongs. DO NOT USE RTV gasket material over time it will crumble and small pieces will fall into tank eventually getting into fuel line and carb causing other fuel problems.

I've had mine siliconed (RTV'd) now for 3+ years, no crumbling, decay or anything. I've run hundreds of gallons through it, no problems....but I will pick up a ring.

thanks for all the great ideas...sounds like i might end up with a not locking cap...which isn't so bad...i'm sure i've spilt more gas than will ever be stolen!

I too have played the locking gas cap game. The bottom line is they don't make one that locks (unless imdarren can tell us what number he is using) AND seals. I am using the Stant non-locking cap on my current truck and the last three or four I had before it - no leaks.

I worry about gas theft and someone dropping crap into the tank, but have never had a problem, at least not that I have noticed

How about it imdarren, can you look at your gas cap and see if it has a stant part number?

Well, there's an exeption to every rule! LOL

I bought a locking gas cap for my '69 and it seals good. I don't know what the name was. The only time it will leak is if I fill it to the top and park it in the sun. The gas expands and is forced out. Nothing is going to stop that but I can fill it to the top (and always do) and do doughnuts if I want (never do) and not lose a drop!

I also never get any fumes like alot here have mentioned. I must be lucky in the fuel department anyway.

great a new fear i haven't thought of...someone contaminating my fuel...now I really want a new locking gas cap...what cap are you using bob?

The caps I'm refering to are NOT locking caps. I don't have a locking cap, nor would I recomend one. Like someone mentioned, you will probably "slosh out" more than could ever be stolen with most locking caps. Darren

Whew! I just went through the large envelope with all my reciepts! You guys better appreciate this. LOL

As far as I can tell, it is a Gates brand. Looks that way by the vendor code. The part number is: Vendor code-GA #31691 and was $11.12 I bought it at a Big A store here in Pottsville back in '99.

That's all I can tell ya. It's been on there all this time and like I said, I fill mine to the top all the time with no leaks or fumes.

I have had locking stant caps on 3 of my trucks and never have had then leak. The only time I ever had a cap leak was when I had the old stock cap on the tank. I have heard many stories of people having their caps leak but I must have gotten lucky on this so far.
