Stock Headliner Questions
I recently cleaned up my door panels and saved myself about 150 bucks by not buying new ones. I was thinking about putting the money I saved towards a stock headliner with chrome trim. What truck package originally came with a headliner? Mine has no evidence of there ever being one up there, but I kind of like the look of them and figure it would be worth doing. Also, how much is involved in installing one and is it worth it? Is the vinyl mounted to some sort of cardboard or is it a plastic? What about the chrome, is it metal or plastic? Thanks!

I have a 70 CST with the headliner. Mounted to cardboard and the trim is metal.

Headliners are nice in that they cut down on the noise inside the cab. The cab is punched in the roof on the trucks that came with the headliners so as to snap the trim in place. You can still glue the headliner in place and screw the trim to the cab with short screws.

The trim is plastic. The original liners where attached with clips in the plastic trim into little retangular slots in the roof. I took the clips off of my new trim and used very short screws. (maybe like 3/16 or so). Very short. Bought a used headliner from Manes in KC/ painted it then glued it along with the screws. No problems.

Maybe I need to look at mine again, and also not respond until I am sure. I probably confused him as much as I am now.

make sure you use short screws...the guy who used to own my old SWB drilled screws right up through the roof. Not cool. |

You guys are right on about the trim being a PITA. When I was tearing out my interior that plastic trim had to be ripped out. It broke into many many little pieces. I have to say that that trim, my park brake cable and 2 bolts were the only casualties in the tear down too. I'm considering removing the tangs on the trim when I reinstall. That way if I ever need to remove the headliner, it doesn't mean replacing the trim!!

My upholstery guy covered my stock headliner in leather, He sewed a nice pattern in it. It's quite a bit heavier than a stock vinyl headliner. I covered the back of the headliner with liquid nails and propped it up very tightly with boards to let it dry overnight. I did'nt use the plastic trim and the ceiling wasn't punched with slots for the trim. I personally think it looks better without the trim.

My truck is definitely not an original headliner truck. There are no slotted holes or any evidence of there ever being adhesive up there (except for an old bumper sticker that is stuck to the ceiling that reads "Hire the morally handicapped". Sounds like the headliner with no trim is the way to go. It's nice to know that works, as I'm not particularly fond of the trim myself either. Liquid nails and a couple pieces of wood to prop it up sounds like a good idea. Looks like this is another mod to add to the list. Thanks guys!

I did the same thing Gonebad did except I covered mine in matchng velour(sp) of my seats and door panels. Then to add a little more sound deadening, I used some of the B-Qiet sound deadening material in between the roof and the headliner. Should add some quietness to the cab. Looks great.
