GMC Pauls has a kit to replace the original straps. He probably can tell you the original locations.

A short battery cable will work also, from the back of the engine to the frame.Get a cable that has an eyelet in each end.

doesnt really matter where they go, just go from the cab to frame, bed to frame, and motor to cab, make sure its clean metal you wire to.

the stock ones from the frame to cab and frame to bed and the engine to cab were "wimpy". You could use 12 guage wire with crimp on terminals on either end.
As for your dash lights, if you were to make a ground strap or or go buy a wimpy one, and ground the inst panel to a bold under the dash, I'd bet it'll work.
And as for the glove box light...remove the light assembly, and wrap some sand paper around your finger, get your sand paper covered finger into the hole and just twist it back and forth a couple times.
I'd bet a punch in the gut that these two things would fix your problems.

I say this becouse you make no mention of other things not workin properly....cab light, wipers, heater, stereo...so that means all of those (or what ever you may have out of that list) all have good grounds.

The factory ground strap goes from frame to cab at the right front cab mount area.

There are three grounding strap locations that I've seen:

1) Between the front right cab support and the part of the frame where the front right cab mount sits.

2) Between the right inner fender and the chassis, way up at the front of the chassis, right behind the radiator.

3) From the firewall to the engine block, barely to the driver side of the distributor.

There's also a little grounding clip that is part of the dash wiring harness that is supposed to slide onto a strip of metal that is part of the dash, located behind the instrument panel, down low.

Just as a side note, one problem I've seen that caused strange lighting problems was a worn out turn signal switch. The bumps on the little brass pieces that slide back and forth when you move the turn signal lever were all worn off, so the brass pieces were shorting all of the circuits together, causing major lighting problems.

Oh, yeah, one other thing. Be sure to use a star washer between the grounding strap and the body panel it is attaching to. The star washer will bite through the paint and make electrical contact with the metal underneath.
