Spinning speedo back DOES remove miles

Some of the replies in "Turning odometer back to zero" thread had me going for a bit. I just came from my shop and, once again, after spinning the speedo back, it does remove miles. So, I'm back to my previous question - does anyone know if this will damage the speedometer? Watching the speedo neeldle bouncing bothers me a little. If I had to remove 10,000's of miles I would follow Lamar's instructions. Since its only a few hundred.......

YEP -- I CAN REMEMBER WHEN I WAS JUST A KID, MY UNCLE COMING OVER IN A BRAND NEW 65 IMPALA & TAKING ME FOR A RIDE AROUND THE BLOCK BACKWARDS. I WAS AMAZED THAT THE ODOMETER WORKED BACKWARDS, REMOVING SHOWN MILES.
ALL YOU HAVE TO DO NOW IS DRIVE AROUND THE BLOCK BACKWARDS, & BE CAREFULL OF NECK CRAMPS. JOHN

If you spin it too quick you can break it.

I personally donot know the answer , but I am curious. May I make a suggestion? If you can't get a satisfactory answer here, then I would go to the junkyard and shell ot $10.00 for a speedo to test it out on. That way you can be certain not to ruin the unit you already have.

It is kind of slow taking the miles off with a drill. I timed it and its at the rate of 90 mph in reverse, but the miles still go away slowly. I probably will just take it apart and do the other suggested method from that other thread. I have a couple so if I screw one up I do have a spare.

I had a '76 Mercury Comet when I was a kid. I rolled the odometer twice in one day. After rolling it from 999,999.9 to 000,000.0; I stopped, backed up until I hit 999,999.9 and then went forward again. Thirteen miles later, I totalled the car.

Needless to say, but I will anyway, the odometer on it went backwards. That was at a fairly low rate of speed though.

It's not illegal in Iowa after a cerain number of years. I'm not sure what that is, but its far less than 35 or more.

This Is Strange, I just messed up two speedo units trying to get them back to 00000.1. My mileage is exempt so i feel i can take it back if i choose. Since I plan on rebuilding my 78-81 Blazer/Truck.

Now i need to get a new speedo unit for my truck.

Done, Ordering paint. Got paint, Stuff painted,Cab,Fenders, Hood more later. 9/7/2015 Got the clear coat on,now time to take one off. Started to put things back (What a nightmare) like the heating and AC stuff, inside wire harness, outside AC unit and booster, still more. May 2016, still working on the inside. Got duck work in,heating and AC. Radio (stock) in dash with after market in console later, Speaker are hooked up, Steering column is in. Getting ready to drop the cab onto the frame, Working on engine now since I have the room. Well here it is 2018, got the engine in and it runs, now I need to get the exhaust system in so I can adjust the lifters, to loud right now. Got the exhaust on now I am waiting for the break parts to come in.
