Fixing holes cut out in my bed floor? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Are there any options on fixing the steel bed floor on these trucks? The previous owner installed a fuel cell but cut two holes in the bed of the truck. He then installed an aluminum panel over the top of the holes. I installed a JAZ fuel filler neck that comes up a couple of inches over the top of the bed floor. This whole setup is pretty ugly and I want to do something about it.

It looks like no one makes a new steel bed floor and I haven't found any trucks that still have theirs in good condition. Is a wood floor the only option I have to de-ugly my bed?

Also, any options for the fuel filler? It had just a wedge in it before which was a pain in the butt. Does anyone make a way to hide the filler behind one of the taillights like in an old Bel-Air?

I'll take a picture of it when I get off work to give you all a better idea of what I am working with. Feel free to post pics of what you did with your fuel cell filler and bed if you want. Thanks.

I would say go to the bone yard and find another truck with a similar bed that's rusted out or in poor shape. Cut a section 3-4 times the size you need, bring it back to the house, trace out the piece you need, grind it down a mm or two around the edges and tack weld it into place. Grind down the tack welds and bondo it the rest of the way in?

Several guys have mounted the fill tube behind the driver's side marker light. Here's a link for a stepside, the fleetside should be similar.

As far as your bed floor, make a WTB post on the parts board with pics of the area you need to patch and I am sure you will get what you need.

Click that link and search the page for the word "Bed". They have several bed panels there. I don't know if anything for the bed floor is available, though.

i would put a patch in it and then have a spray in bedliner put in 1 to help cover it up and 2 they look pretty good and are also useful

Its ez to mend, just make sure you get a patch that the corrigations (sp?) line up with what you currently have - I'm discovering that it can be tough to get them lined up if they arent just right. As for hiding a filler, someone here has done it but my memory is letting me down right now.... Good luck & keep us updated.

Thanks for all of the great information. Inever did get around to taking a picture of it but maybe it's better to spare everyone the uglyness of it all haha.

Putting the gas cap behind the side marker was awesome but unfortunately an older bed without the side markers was put on this truck (the fronts were patched over)

Again thanks for the great info, I think I am going to try and patch the sections that were cut out. They were cut out nice and square at least. It's really too bad too, because the bed is otherwise perfect.

The bed musta come off a 67 and the front fenders filled in to match. 67 is the only year that doesn't have sidemarker lights. Another thing to consider is some people have put the filler in a stake pocket. Or you could graft the fuel door off a later model vehicle.

You could also cut out a fuel door from another vehicle/truck and graft it into you side fender. One of the folks did it using a Mazda door and remote cable on their's. Tyen patch the bed.

Thanks, those are great ideas as well. I definately want to do something along those lines. Does anyone have a link on doing a gas filler in the stake pocket or grafting a fuel door from another truck onto one of ours? I couldn't find anything in the FAQs. That would help give me an idea on how to start it. Thanks again everyone
