I like it,though I'm having trouble imagining a nice '72 like that sitting next to me a light idling with that diesel rattle.
I'm not showin this to the oldtimer. He's been threatening to do the same to my '66 that's parked at the farm. It's the "it's on my property so it's mine" idea.

Diesels at $2.69 a gallon over here. I can barely afford to fee my SBC. I bet it was a torque monster in its day though.

too bad its got just about the most gutless diesel ever made in it. a healthy small block will outpull a 6.2 any day of the week

that's true a 6.2 isn't a very good diesel,but the creativity is there.

they even put a 6.2L diesel emblem on the t/g from a newer truck...how tacky. that is a waste...that truck looks so nice.

I wouldn't say that. When I got my 72 from my uncle it had a 6.2 diesel in it. The truck would pull a house off the foundation, would run circles around alot of late model small blocks and would get 25 MPG. The only reason I pulled the motor was I fried it coming back from Super Chevy. It blew the belts off running up Rt.95 and I had to drive it 10-15 miles with no water pump turning and the temp gauge pegged to get off the highway. After I bought a new belt I still drove it the 65 miles home. Try that with a gas motor...

Personally I think it's a good looking truck. Probably not that far from me either. If any one is serious about it and wants someone local to take a look send me a PM. I'm not buying it but must admit it might have some great ideas and be worth a look.

I dig the wood grain dash components and - WOW - check out the floor mats! I'd never put either in my truck, but I still think they're cool in some weird sort of way.

I doubt it is stock,, but a very interesting idea.. it was a new diesel in 1984,,, well thats a 20 year old one now... , I had a 6.2 in a 1983 chevy,, not a bad truck,, but would hate to have to rebuild it now..., but the idea of a diesel in a 72,, that would be great for a daily driver I would think

GM 6.2L Diesel. Absolutely the second-worst engine ever in a Chevy!!! First was those POS aluminum engines in the '71-'75 Vegas. Third is the 267 in Malibus and El Caminos in the early '80s.

That being said, it looks to have had good care and feeding over 20+ years, and would probably get 22 mpg, to boot! More on the highway! If it weren't clear across the country, I'd almost be interested!

Explain that one to me. The 5.7 Olds Diesel was a terrible, terrible engine, but the I have seen many 6.2's with over 300,000 and counting. The glowplug controllers in them were troublesome, but it was a great engine as far as the durability goes. I had an '83 K-20 with a 6.2 and it had 282,000 miles when I sold it 6 years ago. The guy I sold it to is still using it today to pull his Bobcat. What do you consider the best engine they made? 350?? 454?? Show me one that has 300,000+ miles on it and never had the heads off that will still a pull gooseneck trailor and a Skid Steer with ease. Show me that, and I'll show you the Unicorn that I keep tied up in back yard.

OK, top-ten, then. Forgot all about that much-more-forgettable 5.7 Olds gas block conversion POS. When I was working for a Chevrolet dealership in the service department in 1979, there were those nasty 5.7 1/2-ton pickups that were selling like hotcakes for a few months - then they started coming back to the dealer after just a few hundred to a few thousand miles with all kinds of problems ranging from cracked heads to overheating. We had two come in in one day for bent connecting rods. We had one for a service department truck for a whopping one month - then we went back to the 3/4-ton 350 truck we'd loaned to the body shop and never looked back.

Best GM Diesel so far in light trucks has been the DuraMax, IMHO.

Best V-8 gas engine, the lowly little 283 2-bbl from '63 to '68. Never had one crap out on me, ever.

You asked.

Hate to rain on your guys' parade, but GM hasn't built a Diesel yet that was a GREAT engine................I been in new trucks with Dura'japs and they are nice, but certainly not my first choice for a work truck(More like my 2nd choice).

I contemplated putting a 6.2 in mine, but I am not fond of a V-8 Diesel(Had a IH with a Triple Trouble Cummins aka 555)...................Beside that would be too easy.

Patrick66,

I agree the Duramax is a much better engine 6.2. I have just seen a lot of 6.2's with tons of miles on them with little or trouble, and they are better engine than you indicated, IMO. They do leave a lot to be desired in the power department in stock form. I also can't argue much about the 283, its a great engine. The newer fuel injected engines have more power and last longer, but there not really something just anybody can tinker with. Computers take a lot of fun out of our hobby!

TP from Cntl PA,

I also agree with you. The Cummins is about as good as gets as far as engines compact enough to fit in light duty trucks. A diesel engine is a low RPM, torque oriented engine just by design. Its only natural that an inline cylinder, long stroke design compliments the purpose of the Diesel design. There's a reason why you don't see V8 Diesels in Peterbuilts!

I'm doing a 6.2 swap in my 67 C-30 because as I said I've had good luck with them in past, and the fact that I already have one in a wrecked 88,000 mile Suburban. Its a simply conversion, and it will fit my needs well enough. I have also bought the turbo and manifolds off of a newer 6.5 to use to give me a little power. I looked at intercooler off a newer truck that I may try to adapt also.

I think Duramax in one of our trucks would be cool.
the 6.2 can run like a raped ape if it has a turned up pump & 6.5 heads & injectors. I did this to a customers 85 van & it gets up to 100 on the interstate pretty fast.
we have a customer with a fleet of 14 Savanna vans with the 6.5. they all have well over 300,000 still going strong (except that one that had the turbo seals blow & he kept going for another 500 miles)
