Those with fuel cells under bed, I need help with mounting it.
I have the Summit Racing fuel cell that I want to mount between the rails at the rear underside of the box. The question I have is regarding how to mount it. It came with 2 U straps that go around it. Now what I need to know is if I need to mount it so that it sits flush with the top of the frame, or like I seen in a picture, sitting slightly higher than the frame.
But the problem I can see coming is with the box crossmember that goes across right above it. I think it might hit the fuel filler neck that is stiking up right there. Any pics, advise, help appreciated!

While I know 67-72's are different than 73-87's, here is the article I wrote when I did the same thing in my '73. Maybe it will help a little.

I removed a crossmember on my frame, I think most folks do? I'll look for a pic and can take more if you need.

Spooof,
Have you noticed how much you have to hack out of you bed crossmember ? It made me so sick to sent the tank back. I bought a 20 gallon 24x20x10 Fuel Cell from Triangle Eng. with a 0-90 ohm sending unit. I will mount it next weekend I was planning on using stainless straps 1/8" x 2" mabye 1 1/2" wide and bolt them to the frame and mounting pads on the cell. I will post pics when I get it finished.

It doesn't affect the strength of that bed that much!
I cut the crossmember on my 80 GMC's bed, and since it was super rusty, I simply jumped on it to test the strength of the floor, and my 195 lb self jumping directly onto the center of the cut crossmember did nothing to the bed. If you were really concerned about it, get an I-bar of metal of the right height, slip it into there, weld it up, then seal r' up to protect against rust.

Hey Mario, Did you get this install done? As for mounting the fuel cell, my straps will be going from front to rear, not side to side. I'm talking an actual fuel cell, not a blazer tank. Here is a picture from somebody's truck. (not mine) But notice how close far he mounted it above the frame rails? I assume this is because it looks like he is planning on having a door in the bottom of the bed. I will be using a hose to the center of the cell. So I guess it just needs to be enough to clear the hose.

Lost Wages,
So you raised it from what you have in the picture? What method of fuel filler do you have? I was hoping for the side marker light fill. |

I did not end up getting the cell mounted yet. I forgot it was march break and my Girlfriend was home from school so All I made time to for was rebuild the tilt coloum. I will get the cell mounted this weekend. Hopefully..... I know it's Easter but I should be able to fit it in. I did a bit more thinking. I decided to run the straps from front to back. I just had not about mounting another crossmember behind the axel to mount the front of the straps to. My truck is a leaf truck and there is only one crossmember and it's at the back.
We will need to mount the cell flush with the top of the frame unless you are cutting the bed floor out.

His fuel cell looks identical to mine. That is how I planned on mounting it. But I wasn't sure how high I could go with it. I don't have a bed for the truck yet, so I was hoping someone could measure and tell me for sure. Reid

You have to keep the fuel cell level or below the top of the frame. The bed crossmember sits right on top. If you put the tank higher than the frame you will need to notch the bed crossmember.(or floor)

on mine i just cut the bed floor out, its got a trap door on a hinge to get to the filler. In the first pic of mine the bed lays on it, i raised it around 8 inches.
