Help-Detent cable confusion has me stuck
I'm trying to cobble together my 350 with Q Jet with a TH350 tranny from a 307 with a two barrel. I have a detent cable but I can't figure from which engine, it won't reach and even if it did I don't know hwere the puppy goes...even though I have three different manuals!! Can anyone tell from the pic if I need a new detent cable, different bracket or different Carb linkage thingy? All the pics I've seen have different style Q Jet throttle arms.
(thanks for the pics 71 Longbed, but not the same) Thanks

The linkage bracket looks strange to me for some reason. The throttle return springs looks crooked to me. Looks like you might need at least one more stud to attach the detent also. Did you unlock the tab before stretching it?

Thanks for your input.
I don't believe the tab is unlocked...I'll try that in the morn. I have a stud but I'm not sure where to place it. I'm just holding the detent cable in a rough position to where it should mount, but it doesn't seem to want to reach anywhere on the linkage that the throttle attaches to ( it's not hooked up in the pic) As you say the return springs are sketchy indeed.

Looks to me like the carb is not equipped to connect a kickdown cable to. I would have to look at mine tomorrow. Its a '70 though. You're not trying to hook it to the bracket on the carb stud are you? That looks like a throttle cable bracket to me.

It looks like someone has cut off the lower part of the accelerator linkage, (the part that has the connecting stud for the cable on it). Your cable slips onto the stud and there is a small groove for the retaining clip on hte stud.
Here is a pic. Jim |

You should print JimKshortsep4x4's pic and take it to the junkyard to match it up to a bracket they might have. That little hole behind the front bracket is for the return spring.

Spoof,
From what I can see of your detent bracket you have the right one. If you find that you need a bracket, they are avilable new yet from GM or other parts suppliers. Jim |

Thnaks Jim,
Are you refering to the detent bracket that bolts to the intake manifold? If so I will stick with that and replace the carb accelerator/ detent arm with a different style. Do you think the carb linkage is available from an autoparts store?

Spoof,
The bracket that bolts to the manifold looks good to me. You will probably have a problem locating the linkage as it is swedged to the shaft. If you are handy at removing small broken screws I have a good baseplate that has two broken screws on the secondary shaft that you can have for shipping costs. Otherwise the primary plates can be removed and the shaft can be used on your carb plate. If you are interested I can give you more details on what is needed. Otherwise another carb is an option. JimK...thanks for your neighbourly offer!
I'm thinking that the carb is an unknown to begin with I may just get a new one. If I take apart a Q jet it will likely never fuel another engine again! The question is now, rebuilt Q jet...Edlebrock repro...holley, or dare to dream Speed demon? Regardless, thanks for all the help guys, I think I've found the cause of the problem and I can move forward fron here. Thanks again.
