Hey if your still around I might be able to post some crewcab pics

Sorry I never replied sooner.I didn`t think I could post attachments in here, but I think I can.If you are still looking for pics I`ll try and post some here.
I like the crews too. After I finish my burb I`ve got an 88 gmc crewcab that I want to convert to 4x4 and shorten the frame and run a stock shortbox on it.All the pics I have are 4x4 crews though, not sure if that`s what you are looking for or just 2 wheel drive trucks.Post here and let me know and I`ll post them up.

How about some factory brochures?

http://brochures.slosh.com/

If you hadn't already guessed, I'm a bit of a 4-door truck connaisseur. The 73-91 GM crewcab is 33" longer than a regular cab truck. All use a 1-ton frame & axle (even the 3/4-ton), have a 164.5" wheelbase, and use the same rear doors as suburbans. Factory 4wd crewcabs didn't come out until '77.

What else do you want to know?

I just bought one. I have been looking for a while and they are not easy to find. (In Hawaii anyway). Lots of 2wd's and Duallys, I wanted a 4wd, with single rear wheel and finally got one. Solid California truck, 99% rustfree with a built 396, 10" suspension lift with 3" body. 39.5" Boggers on 16.5X14 Welds. I'll post pics when I can. FYI Ebay comes up with a few once in a while, Collector car trader is another site. Good luck....

can a 2wd crew cab be converted into a 4wd simply by cutting out 2wd front suspension and adding a 4wd front axle?

You unbolt the entire front suspension crossmember. It also supports the engine, so you need to fab or swap in engine supports. (Some call it a K-member)

Now you add spring hangers, use a 4wd steering box, and bolt in an axle and t-case. That's really it - in a nutshell.

I scalped a few 4wd frames of their bracketry over the years for just such an endeavour... never actually got to converting one.
