Question Polyethylene gas tank question

I have a poly tank kit for my 70 lwb with a metal bed.

The fuel filler neck is only 1.5 inches outside diameter, so should there be
corresponding rubber fuel filler line at the local parts store (NAPA)?

Then how do I go from a rubber filler line to metal for a gas cap?

I am probably going with a bed floor filler, unless I find a filler kit for through the side of the bed.

Is this going to be a big problem to overcome? I have not found anything in catalogs to go from this small inlet on the tank out to a gas cap.

I looked in the FAQ section and the installs over there deal with metal tanks.

So any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I just did this yesterday. I took a trip to the wrecking yard a few days ago and found a great doner, a mid 80's Honda passenger car and took the fuel filler neck and fill hose out of it. This was the pieces that went from the side of the car all the way to the inlet of the tank. I did have to do some cutting and welding to make it work but after some thought and careful measuring I now have a steel floor mounted filler, and the best part of it all was the Honda fuel size was very close (within an 1/8 of an inch or less) so the rubber end slipped right onto the blazer inlet tube with very little resistance. It's mostly metal tubing as well with about 2" of rubber where the neck meets the tank. Pretty tidy setup, and it is nicly protected with being so tucked up and next to the rearmost bed crossmember.

It really does not look to pretty at the moment, but the way Honda made it I was able to drill 3 small holes around where I holesawed into the bed and bolted it all together where the inlet has a flange around it with 3 threaded studs for bolting onto the side of the body. In my case, the floor of the bed. Now, my bed was not in the best of shape to begin with, so making a 2 1/4 inch hole for a fuel fill did not hurt my feelings to much. Or drilling for mounting studs to poke through.

Sorry, no pics yet I will when I get this thing more completed.

I just did the conversion on my '72 . The tank I used is a metal one but I believe the inlet is the same size on either one. I used an 1.5" hose to connect to the tank, it was alittle bigger than the inlet but I went to a local race car builder to get some help and he suggested using a 2" muffler clamp to cinch down the hose which worked out worked GREAT! For the fuel door I used a Hagan setup which came complete with the cap. The fuel door has a 2" inlet so I used a 2" to 1.5" exhaust reducer.
I bought the fuel hose at O'Reilly auto parts as well as all the other additional parts I used. Overall it turned out ok.. I'm just getting back into welding after a 20 year hiatus so it ain't purty but it works...

Could you list some part numbers from the Orilley store for the gas cap and door? The closet orilley is about 50 miles from me, but I usually make it to that town about once a month.

Anyone else and please include part numbers if available.

thanks for all the replies.

I did mine a little differently. I went to a boat dealer (in the desert?) and got a filler neck and cap and mounted it on the back side of the wheel well. Had no problem with the hose.

buster, was this for your longhorn truck?

Are you referring to inside the bed or underneath inside the wheelwell?

jonny05, thanks for the website and part number, it is a big help.

Yes, my 1 ton Longhorn. The cap is inside the bed, at the back of the wheelwell. The hose, of course, mounts in the underside wheelwell and connects to the filler neck on the tank.
