Okay, I need help again...brakes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I installed all new parts for my rear drum brakes on my 1969 SWB. I installed new wheel cylinders, shoes, and springs. I also bought new drums. Here's my problem. I can't get the drums over the new shoes, and the adjuster is closed all the way. Looks like I need about 1/8 to 1/4 inches more of clearance. Any ideas? I'm afraid if I force the drums with my brand new BFH I might damage the shoes.

Use the hammer handle to tap the drums on both sides, if they are not seated correctly the drum won't go over them.

Make sure the pads are on correct(in the right direction of the backing plate) if i remember correctly the short is toward the front of the truck and the long is toward the rear , sometimes the set comes with 2 short shoes and 2 long shoes, some sets are bonded evenly, also if every is on correctly and still cant get it on, take the drums to be turned, I know new stuff shouldnt be turned right? well sometimes you can get a bad batch that are out of specs from the box, I got a new drum for a mustang once that was egg shaped and couldnt be turned, had to get another new one..must have been made on friday.........

Hey Smitty, I'm going to get the drums turned tomorrow. The paper in the box actually says to get them turned. The other thing I noticed was that the new adjuster screw assembly is about 1/4 inch longer than the old one I took off. I'm not sure why that is except parts companies try to make parts that will work on a variety of models. I plan to just put the old adjusters back on. I cleaned them up. They don't look as good, but everything will look the same soon enough as the brake dust settles.

Try backing off on the e-brake adjustment if your still having trouble.

make sure your pistons on your cylinders are pushed in too. That can cause a bit of greif.

Sorry to state the obvious, but make sure the adjuster screw is threaded in all the way. Oh, and make sure not to mix up the adjuster screws from the left and right wheels. One has threads that are backwards.

It sounds like the wheel cylinders are the culprit or poss. e-brake. This might sound stupid but are the new drums the parts guy gave you the correct ones? I just did a complete brakejob on my 69 (last fall) and I could not find new rear drums anywhere, and was told they have discontinued rear brake drums from 69 and earlier (1/2 ton, leaf rear, c/10) I was lucky and there was enough meat on them to turn once more but next time i'll have to reline them or go to the wreckers. Doug

If the rear are 11 1/2 brakes, autozone has the drums in stock? You need some shipped up there to BC 69 SF?
