question for you big block swappers
i've been tossing around the idea of something a little more practical for a toy. one of my initial thoughts was another 2wd C10, with a stock or very mild drivetrain, fully loaded, lowered, and cherried out. my buddy knew that i had been considering getting rid of my 86, and told me that he may be interested in getting rid of the 12,000 mi 454 he has that came out of a 77 C30 dually he bought for parts.
my question is, for those of you who have swapped in big blocks, is anyone running AC and/or factory cruise control? how hard was it to swap over from small block stuff? i think if i do this, i'll look for a truck that is already loaded from the factory, and drive it with the stock drivetrain for a while. while i'm driving it, i'll get the body into decent condition, and make sure the brakes and suspension are up to par, then swap in the big block and a 4L80E. with the mild big block, and OD trans, it should make for an exciting little driver around town, and should get "reasonable" milage if i ever wanted to take it on the highway once in a while. |

I never swapped in the AC from my SBC but I would reccomend using SBC motor mounts and Hooker comp. headers #2455. The 4L80E sounds great. I believe you can get a stand alone computer to run in your truck. I hope to get my GearVendors in this week. Sounds like a good project. I guess you got the slammed truck bug. Post pics of "before" status.

as of right now, i have no truck to do it with, just researching for future refrence.
this isnt the first lowered truck i've had. the original "1FaastC10" was 3/5 dropped C10 LWB, and i started to bring it back as a 5/7 dropped SWB, but abandoned the project when i discovered the cab too far gone to continue. i had all of the chassis parts to do it, they have since been sold to various members here. about those headers, what kind of clearance do you have? hang below the frame? what size tires are you running? |

The #2455 are the perfect header for lowered trucks with BBC. They tuck up in the frame rail and have great spark plug access. I use the Taylor 8mm with a 135 degree boot (PERFECT)! The tires I'm running are 295/40/20 on a (20X9.5)Kumho's rear and 255/35/20 on a (20X8.5) front. I love the rear tire but my next front tire will be a 245/40/20 for a little extra side wall. Nothin' pulls like a BBC

My truck didn't come with cruise control, and I went to a differnt style of ac compresor and it was moved from the driver side to the pasinger side. When I get the money or time I'm just going to go with a vintage air unit. Sorry I can't be of more help.

im starting to like the idea of a stripped down sleeper, but im gettin old, so full options would be nice. with a BBC under hood i could make up for the added weight and power draw from the added accessories.

I'll get some pics up for ya soon. The sandersons are nice but the hookers are a little more symetric.

Ive got the hookers on mine & they fit perfect like AirMale said. Id run the bbc block mounts though because on mine the drivers header wouldnt clear the clamshell. I had to massage the one tube to clear. The passenger side dropped right in & they clear the frame rails perfectly. I did have to move the shift linkage a bit to clear too. I say go for it...corn
