Question best place to pull temperature

anyone got suggestions on where the best place to set the temperature sensor? the cross over on the manifold is out, the hose is too close. i have a sensor in the drivers head right now that i think took a crap, gauge stopped working. it was never accurate anyway because the engine and sensor are 1995 and the hole is smaller than the 1972 sensor. my water pump has the plug in the top that looks to be the right size, but isnt that water cooled already? should nt i want to take the hot temp? how about a spacer under the existing housing with a sensor in it? my race car friend thinks this would be best, but i am having a tough time finding the spacer with the hole in it. any suggestions?

I know there is on the average about 15 degrees difference between the head & thermostat. most engineers like to use the head as it shows a higher temp to scare people sooner. head down to your local parts store & open the Standard Motor Products illustrated parts catalog. there will be a listing of senders with the correct thread size (3/8 NPT) for your heads. if I get a chance today I will look at work.

This is an old problem. No one has ever found a sensor that will work to my knowlege. Everyone that fits the later model heads has the wrong electrical value.

I've had to run the original sensor in the intake manifold and put a shield on top of the sensor so the radiator hose doesn't rub a hole on the sensor's wiring connector.

I installed new VDO guages and used the temp under the water hose in the intake. But I had my brother machine out a 2inch spacer to bring the water neck up so it doesn't interfere with the temp wire.

Good luck with it.

Thumbs up

tx firefighter, that's the problem i had. worked at a parts house and looked through the books, came up empty. and i did the shield under the hose trick, but it looked less than trick

400ex, i have seen such spacers for sale from like jegs or summit, but cant locate them now. as i stated, my race car bud says he thinks he has one with a hole for a temp sender, but he's in NC and i am in WA. a few miles difference anyone have opinions on taking the temp from the water pump? i will continue search for the spacer with the hole.

thanks guys.

His heads have different size threaded holes for the sending unit. Later engines changed to smaller senders.

find a 1/2 NPT tap.
the hole on the water pump is on the cold side of system (return from heater core)

I got Dart heads and had trouble finding a sending unit, but got a later model one that works. I always heard the head is most accurate, since thats your combustion chambers.
