questions on console types

My 1970 pickup has factory buckets and a console. The console has two rectangle slots on either side of the ash tray. I assume they are for packs of smokes or maybe for the seat belt buckles.

I have noticed other consoles with the round beverage holders. Are these factory for a 1970. I like thge beverage holder idea better.

From what I have been told the slots are for seat belt buckles and are original for trucks up to 72. The beverage holder type was then used from 73 onwards. If you like the beverage better, use it. Unless your truck is almost completely stock it won't matter which one you have anyway.

Back in the day we held the Colt 45's between the legs and handed them to the passenger when shifting.

This design continued up thru 76/77 when the can holder idea kicked in. This innovation allowed freed the passenger up for the "roll your own" task.

Seriously, the correct console is the one desgned for the belt buckles to keep them handy (like we buckled up either) .

Here is a pic from a 73 GMC brochure showing the belt holder style console was still used.

Beverage console a better idea

Thanks for the input. I think I will keeep the original console in case I ever sell the truck, but I may pickup up the more modern console for using. I have seen some that are constructed the same with the metal hinges and the chev logo. I have also seen some that are all plastic and look cheap.
