Pitman Arm ?
I'm swapping from manual to power steering on my '68. I got the power steering box and pitman arm off my 72 parts truck. The tapered stud on the pitman arm is VERY loose so I went to O'Reilly's to get another one. I told them I wanted a pitman arm for a '72 1/2 ton with power steering. $74 later I'm on my way. I get home and compare it to the one that was on the manual steering box that came off my '68 and they look IDENTICAL. Now from what I've read here the pitman arms are supposed to be different..... Can someone help? I don't want to spend $74 bucks if I don't have to.

The tapered stud on the pitman that connects to the drag link is different between manual and power steering, which means your drag link won't match either. I'd go yank your drag link off of your '72.

Colbalt, the 72 drag won't work unless he changes the complete front end. The tie rod tapered studs are a different diameter on the 68.
Rurs, You need to get a pitman arm for a 68-70 truck with ps. The diameter of the steering box shaft that it mounts on is different compared to the manual box. Now if were me, I'd change the whole brake system & steering linkage; disc stop MUCH better!

thanks guys, here's the plan. The '68 came with manual steering and manual drum brakes. I've got a '72 donor truck that I took the power steering box from. I've acquired drop spindles and a 5 lug disc brake kit that fits 63-70 from a fellow member, as well as a small power booster/MC/and proportioning valve from another member. I don't want to swap whole front crossmembers because mine is in good shape.
So, with my '72 box, I still need to get a Pitman arm for a '68-'70 so it will fit the stud that attaches to the drag link. Are the studs that come out of the steering boxes the same in '68 and '72? Thanks for the help!

You'll know for sure when you attatch the new one. BTW, if you didn't know already, you'll need a heavy duty puller to get the old pitman arm off. They make ones just pit arms, you may be able to rent. DO NOT use a pickle fork type remover.
