New Life in the Beater

Hello fellas! I just bought a 1966 c 10 from a local here and it needs help. I am wanting to pull the motor and tranny for a while so that i may rebuild it. I am still fairly new the the truck world and unsure of a good motor tranny combo that I could put in. It will be temporary so I wanted to purchase an in-expesive combo from a junk yard or something that will run for a while and keep the beast rolling. So the big question is does anyone have any good suggestions, to point the rookie in the right direction? Any specific years or models that are particularly easy to find or easy to work with? Thanks in advace for the words of wisdom!

Lenny

The guy I bought it off of was not very helpful and didn't know what it had in it. He claimed it was because he bought it to restore for his dad and lost intrest. I crawled under it to look at the tranny and it looks like a powerglide (based off pics of transmission pans on the net). When I drove it I think I felt 3 shifts. I am going to crawl under it this weekend to get the casting numbers off the tranny and block. It's a V8. With a 2 barrel carb.

Looks like fun to me. Look on the tranny for a kickdown cable, P/Gs don't have one th 350 do. You might look for a complete running donor car or maybe a 73-87 pu in rough shape. If you choose the p.u you can swap the front discs and power steering to your truck. There are some good deals around here on items like that, I found an 84 buick (still being driven daily)four door car with a good 305 and 700r4 for 450.00, and a 76 chevy half ton with a 350 and a th350 for 500.00. If you go with a donor the extra parts will be very helpful both on your truck and maybe in trade. Have fun.

Any small block would fit it. If you swap the tranny (th350 would be the logical and cheap choice), you're faced with altering your driveshaft to fit the changed length.

If the tranny isn't in bad shape, and you just want a cheap engine swap, get any 350 from a 73-87 truck with an auto and you should be able to swap the flexplate and go.
