What 6 Cyl engine is in a 63 C10?

I just bought a 1963 C10 yesterday afternoon and still waiting for the tow people to bring it to my house. It has a straight 6 in it with the shifter on the column. Would this be a 250? I got it for $550 and it runs great with no smoke! Turns out the guy's father drove it and hardly ever went over 40 in it. Its one of those deals you only dream of! It does have a bit of rust on it but I'll enjoy slowly restoring it. I'll post pictures tomorrow when it stops raining here!

Thanks,

Warren

If you can see the numbers on the block the best way to find out is to check this page>> http://inliners.org/casting/numbers.html

I was told an engine I got from this guy in Arlington was a 230 and it turns out to be a Chevrolet/Olds 216. It was free so I cannot complain lol.

On the 63's I believe the engine choices for 6 cylinders were 230, 250 and 292. The 230 was the most common so chances are that is what you have.

Yes, it is a 230. Its runs pretty good but smokes a little. I really don't want to rebuild it but instead put a new rebuilt engine in. Since the 250 is very common, can I put any chevrolet 250 engine in my C10? Will it go right in with no problem as far as the engine mounts go?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure a 250 would drop right in. I don't think the motor mounts changed. Are you looking to get a 250 from the same era or a newer one? I know if you go with a small block V8 you just have to change out one motor mount strap. So a 6 cylinder doesn't seem like it would be a problem.

Question Our 63 engine got a 65 upgrade But???

We just bought an engine for our recently aquired '63 (which had somehow ended up with a swapped over engine to a 250 from a '69 Truck).

Now the engine we bought was suppossed to be the original engine in a 1965 C-10. (We were looking for a 250) But when I ran the number (on the block to the right of the Distributor), the engine came up as a 230 CI 140 HP in-line built for the 1965 Impala?

The guy who had the 65 it came from says it was the original engine? Is it possible that the 65 C-10 was built with a 230 140-horse made for an Impala? Was a 230 an optional engine in 1965?

I am pretty sure that the 230 was not offered in a 1965 C-10. Anyone know?

Thanks! rico
