No rearview mirror?

I spent several hours stripping old sound deadening mats off the floor of my cab yesterday and getting the seat out. When I stood back to admire my progress, I noticed that my truck has no rearview mirror. Not glued on, not on the cab. None. FYI, I know this is the original cab.

Was a rearview optional in 68?

Here are some pics

Weird? Dunno.

I think the 67 had a plane flat mirror bracket and the 68 had a fancier design with etching. My 68 had a couple holes above the windshield, but didn't seem to fit the 68 mirror I purchased, so I made new holes. The 69 to 71 I believe had the ones with the plastic covering the mounting screws and the 72 was the first glued to the windshield (maybe even 71).

Though I've not seen it, the RV mirror was optional as evidenced by the lack of holes in your cab. 72 was the only year the mirror was mounted on the windsheild.

I guess this proves how cheap my grandfather really was! I am surprised he did not ask them to leave off the brakes or seatbelts!

I think maybe the inside mirror was only on the fancier models, seems like my dad had some 63 chevy work trucks (plain vanilla) not even a heater and they only had an outside mirror.

Well I guess if you have outside mirrors on both sides you don't really need a rearview mirror, unless it's required by your state's inspection. Think of all the big rigs etc that have no view straight out back. I drive a 24' straight truck with a box body regularly and if the outside mirrors are big enough, that's all you need.

Yeah, the cab ceiling is one of the only places that does not have some rust on it! So I'm glad that mirror is not there!

And if I ever lose it in the Home Depot parking lot, I can just look for the truck without a rearview mirror.

The mirror was federally mandated in 69, but GM didn't make it standard untill 70.

Well, even with only outside mirrors, it will pass inspection in Texas. Only one mirror is required, either mounted in the cab or outside. Makes it kind of unique. Maybe I'll leave it like it is.

I agree, who needs a stinking rear view mirror anyhow? Who needs to see what is behind them?

My 68 has no holes but I found a windshield glue one in the glove box when I got it. I just glued it back for now. I assume I have the RV mirror option because the sticker in the glove box say in a really messed up manner R_ Mirrors.

Just my experience so far.

I might just get one that glues on. But I won't have to worry about it for a while. It's sitting with no seat, no carb and no battery. So we aren't going anywhere for a while.

My 1968 CST 50th anniversary truck has no rearview mirror or any holes in the cab where a mirror should mount. It also has the camper special option and I thought that may be a reason for no mirror.

That is a great point. My grandpa almost always drove this truck with wooden sidewalls on the bedsides and across the rear window. So that he could haul veggies from the field. He could not have seen anything anyways...
