Micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, depth guages, scopes, etc....

I've looked at Snap-On and Harborfreight so far. Snap-On is EXPENSIVE.

I get mine from harbor freight mainly because I don't use them enough to need snap on.

Try the pawn shops. When jobs are scarce and people are out of work (like these days), you can find some good deals on quality tools. A lot of the Harbor Freight stuff is poorly made, wont hold up to serious use, and not always accurate. We had a guy in our shop buy some of their dial calipers and our quality dept. wouldn't let him use them because they were so far out they couldn't be calibrated. You get what you pay for most times.

I have to agree there. I've bought some of the more general use tools, like hammers, vices, and other stuff from them. When it shows up it looks like it's been sitting in a barn for 20 years. I don't think I want to get precision tools from them.

Look for names like Starrett, Brown & Sharpe, and Mitutoyo. These brands are going to be more expensive, but it's just like the old say "You get what you pay for."

I have been around machine tools and using precision measuring tools for the past 17 years and I will only buy Starrett and/or Browne & Sharpe.

Try eBay....lots of used tools there too.

I get mine from snap-on, matco,cornwell ,harbor freight and but not least the pawn shops. seems like the gi's around fayetteville are broke.

Just happen to have a really good maintance shop at work and the guys always let me borrow tools over the weekend. saves a lot of money. when i go need to buy a tool i just hit the local auto parts store and get one. ya i could save some money buy shopping around but when you figure in gas or shipping and that all it works out about the same.

My micrometer came from Starret, my dial indicator is a Central, My calipper is a cheap b@astard from a pawn shop. I got most of my tools in a package deal from Snap-On when I went to tech school.

Pawn shops are a good place to get quality tools for a fair price and if you don't like the price they have on the item, they are usually negotiable.....also, check Napa....they are usually reasonable.

What does everyone think about Craftsman from Sears? They have a 0"-3" set of micrometers in a wood box for $99, and I think they use 0.001 graduations.
