Engine size in a 63 C10?

I just bought a 63 C10 that has a straight 6 in it. How can I tell if I have a 230 or a 292 in it? I was searching for an enhaust system for it and RockAuto.com has one for each.

Thanks

230 side covers are about 4" tall, 292 is about 6" tall, 292 has a bypass hose near the upper rad hose. Also the fuel pump & mount are swapped, from front= dist-fuel-pump-mount on 230, dist-mount- pump on 292.Brian

Thanks. It turned out to be a 230. Although it probably fits both, I need a complete exhaust system and found on at rockauto.com. I just hope I can get the bolts loose at the manifold!

I don't have the original VIN tag on my 63 C10 long bed so I was having a hard time to determine the engine size. The partial VIN on the left frame rail is J136507 (no help) and the block casting no. is 3851659. This thread and this page http://www.castingnumbers.info/site/...t/Inline-6/p/4 confirmed I have a 292 165hp.

Spray the fasteners down a couple of times with penetrating oil (Kroil, Gibbs, etc. your preference) over a few days before trying to bust the hardware loose.

Use an air impact. Use heat if needed.

I bought the Walker pipe from Autozone and it had crinkles where the tubing was bent. I stopped by a local muffler shop and he could actually custom bend new pipe for a little cheaper than the Walker parts cost me. Plus, I have a short bed and the Walker pipe only came in long bed size. I would have had to cut out part of the rear section and then weld the pieces together if I had kept the Walker pipes.

The donut is available from vendors or the parts stores. The insert for the donut is also available from vendors. My exhaust manifold bolt holes were bad so I had heli-coils installed and they have held up great.

I was able to install all the exhaust pieces myself and I had a muffler shop to go to if one of the bends needed adjustment.

Just sharing my experience and not the only way to go.

230 motor mounts are straight across from each other and 292 are staggered. Also side covers, as has already been addressed.

Use heat for sure and be VERY CAREFUL when taking those bolts and studs out! Those old manifolds are prone to break. Finding another is no problem...and if ya do break it Somehow...You can now convert to headers!
