If its noisy, I'd pop the cover and run a pattern, some aftermarket are noisy, but I've seen guys able to shim the noise out.....

My neighbor has a set in an 81 12 bolt and we haven't heard any noise from them. Sounds like they aren't shimmed right...

some ratios in aftermarket are noisey no matter what because ever different ratio is ground on the same angle and being quiet isnt as big a deal as being strong. those 4.10's should be quiet though generally the noisey gears are higher ratios i agree with those guys run the pattern and check the gears for wear.

I had 3.42's and 4.56's (both Richmond) in my Nova and both sets had a whine at certain RPM's.

Noisy gears are set-up wrong....until you get to very low ratios (5 and up) you shouldn't hear anything. The bad news is, once they are set-up and run, you may never get them to shut-up. It is just like starting an engine for the first time. Those first few miles are critical.
Changing to a synthetic gear-lube may help some.

I had a Richmond 3.73 for the 3.07 carrier and it was quite as stock, went to the 4.10 for the 3.07 carrier and it loud, checked tooth pattern a few times and it looks perfect. I am going to get rid of my gearless locker because I think that it is transferring noise differently than spider gears do. I blame my posi for the noise but will find out soon when I take it out.

I have Richmond 3:08's in my CST and they were quiet until I put my Gear Vendors overdrive unit on. Went to a 1 piece driveshaft at the same time. I called Gear Vendors and they claim it's not their unit...I believe them because the noise sounds like the rearend. Took the truck back to the guy who installed the gear set and he pulled the cover, looked everything over and said it all looks good. He even ran the marking compound on it and it looked good. They whine at around 25-35 MPH and again at 60-65 MPH. I had heard that Richmond gears are noisy.

Richmond gears are known for being noisy, well at least from me and my buddies experience.

One thing about Richmond gears is that they are very strong compared to a stock gear.

Only gears I will buy are factory GM or Motive Gears. If I start having a problem stripping teeth off the ring gear at the track I would consider a set of Richmonds though...

I don't know about that. I've blown 2 different sets in 2 different trucks and a buddy of mine blew 5 sets in the same truck...

there is a simple solution to any noise in a truck... turn up the stereo
i would pull the cover and check the pattern and if thats ok then you have to live with it or get new gears

...from my experience ..my dad used to set up gears all the time and the first set of richmonds he set up which was a set of 4:56's for me .. he told me if he sets them up the way richmond calls for(pattern wise) they are going to whine..so he set them up stock pattern wise and they never made a sound...

Explain how you "blew" them? I guess I should have noted that I was referring to a 12 bolt gear set. I am talking about the point where you brake teeth off the ring gear from actually stripping the teeth because you are making so much power and you have incredible traction and the ring gear material is now the weakest point in your driveline (meaning your u-joints, driveshaft, axles, input and axle yokes, trans, are all much stronger that this point).

Just wondering because I've only seen it happen twice...

Well in my Toyota I took off from a traffic light, when I shifted into 2nd I heard a bang. Drove it home, pulled the rear out and found 3 broken ring gear teeth and 5 broken pinion teeth, 4:56 gears in a toyota 8" rear. In my Bronco I was in a mud hole pulled 2nd and heard a bang, drove it home pulled the cover and found 4 broken ring gear teeth and the pinion was bald, 4:56 gears in a Dana 44...

Honestly the only thing I would be able to attribute that to would be incorrect backlash or just a poor design rear end (yota 8"). Either way, like I said before, I was referring to the 12 bolt chevy rears where it takes around 650 RWHP to shear teeth off. Add alot of backlash and that number could come down alot.

I don't know, the gears were in the truck when I bought it. I know it wasn't a poor designed rear as the yota 8" is as strong if not stronger than a ford 9"...

Well then like I said, it was probably something else other than the gears in your Toyota that stripped themselves, maybe a pinion or carrier bearing were on the way out and created a bind in the gear pattern. Tons of things could have happened. Anyway, to each their own!
Good luck friends!
