Factory overdrive in a 68 ???
There is a 68 CST truck in a local "U-Wrench-it" that has a 292 and a 3 speed with an overdrive. It is listed on the glove box sticker. Is it anything that is worth pulling?? I have a friend that goes there all the time and would pull it if someone was willing to pay for his time.

If it is the original 68 one it is a Saginaw not a Muncie and it is identified with a 7 bolt side cover around the shift levers. This is a HD fully synchroed unit. They used this from late 65 to around 69 and I had to search high and low for one for my 56 Bel Air. Maybe not a large market but a few of us like them. It is a rare upgrade for the tri fives when you want to look original but have the better tranny with less gear whine and better driveability. If someone here doesn't jump on it please shoot me a price and throw it in my pile of other stuff to pick up. Make sure when he pulls it to get the dash handle, the overdrive relay bolted to the firewall next to the master cylinder, and the short harness from the fuse panel to the tranny. Mark

HOTFUN,
Do you have a picture of what the dash handle is supposed to look like and where it mounts? I have one of these and I got it with the wiring harness and relay but not the lockout cable and handle. Thanks! Bob

I have complete original set up from a 67 and it pretty much is a chrome style handle with squared off corners while the early tri five years were a rounded t handle. I am at work tonight and the handles I have are boxed and not easily accessable in storage. I bought this 68 unit from Joe which he now has for me to pick up and he may be able to post a picture of the handle. I can look through my parts book and see what years of cables will work. Mark

Mark,
Thanks, that would be great! When I was a kid we had a 62 Dorf Galaxie with an overdrive and the lockout handle was similar in appearance to the rest of the knobs on the dash, a little bigger if I remember correctly, it looked like it belonged there. Bob

The handle on a 66 C10 I owned years ago was the same as this 67 handle I have now and looks like the ones used in Impalas from early 60's on. To answer your question they mounted to the lower dash just to the right of the steering column and I think the holes are already in the dash lip.

We can try to get some pics when you come and pick up the tranny. My friend still has it at his place right now.

if anyone else runs across one of these, i have a friend who really wants one... a 68 one would be awesome, but any 67-72 year will work for the right price.
thanks! |

They show up on Ebay from time to time, just make sure you're getting the correct one!

I went through several 1960's printed Chevrolet master parts passenger car manuals and then a 1970 Chevy truck master parts manual and the pass car cables were a variety of cable #'s because of different lengths by applications. There are only two styles of handles themselves used and maybe a third so the cable routing could make up the difference and be able to use any of them. The 1970 printed "10-30 series truck book" shows in group 4.495 one cable for 55-66 #3885519 which is the chrome rounded T handle and then the squared off straight front T handle for 67-69 #3922962. I remember seeing a third style that was a black or gray "plastic" handle and it resembled the 67-69 style and it might be this 67-68 1st design style #3922963. Again I think the GM cars from 62? and up look like the handles on the 67 -69 truck but you might have to route it to make the cable length work. I have seen the cables alone on eBay from time to time. Mark
