Yet another new member

Hey all, Im new too (post #2 here). I was going to reply in the other guy's new member topic to not clutter the board, but I didn't want to jack his thread either. So here I am.

I dont have a K5 Blazer yet, but Im zero'ing in on a couple, and I will own one very very soon. I have a line on a 72 4x4 with a factory 454, and 2x4 72 with a cherry body. Tryting to buy them both. lol Priority one is the 4x4, going to build it fairly big (9-12" lift), second priority is the 2x4 as I love the lowered convertable look of those things. Only bad thing is if I buy and build the 2x4, I'll have to decide to sell it or my current s10 blazer which I love also. Argh heh

Ive been building chevelles and S10 blazers for years, just now getting into the K5's. Love these trucks, surprised I didn't get a hard-on for them sooner.

Welcome to the board from Sacto. Don't think they ever sold a 1st gen Blazer with a "factory 454". May want to ask more questions before buying that.

Hmmm they didn't come with 454's? Ive seen a couple with the emblems (although Ive seen 502 emblems too heh), and this is info from a friend whose a mechanic/bodyman and known the truck's owner since he bought the truck new. He's usually very reliable for this type of info, I'll check back with him before I get serious about the truck. Thanks for the info 71jimmy. If they didn't come factory with a bigblock, you better believe I'll be swapping one in whatever I do buy. I already have a spare (fresh) 396 sitting around the garage waiting for a new home.

I don't think they put big blocks in any of the 4x4's 67-72 from the factory. Check the 67-72 board or 4x4 board for more info.

No big blocks in the Blazers. 350 was the largest motor available. Here are some specs on blazers - http://coloradok5.com/specs.shtml#1972 (scroll down for earlier years.)

If that 2wd is a factory and has a cherry body, it is going to be worth a lot more than the 4wd. If you want to sell it, let me know. Post some pictures when you get them and please fill out your profile. You never know if a board member lives right around the corner from you and has the part or help you need.

Hey guys. Thanks for the replies, and the compliments on the chevelle. She's my first love.

Okay here's the deal on the bigblock truck. Im here in cali, my buddy lives in the midwest, he's a bodyman and mechanic (of 40+ years). He knows a guy that has a blazer ha says he's known since the guy bought it new. I talked to him (my buddy) this morning and asked about the 'factory bigblock'... he informed me it was a 1969 (I had been thinking it was a 72.. which is why I assumed the bigblock would be a 454) and said they made bigblock blazers in '69. *shrug* That's what Im being told, and Steve (my buddy) has been around bigblocks and trucks since before I was born, so I trust him pretty highly. I sent my father over this weekend to check these trucks out, he'll be getting to the bottom of the mystery, and hopefully working a deal for one or both of the truck (the 2WD also).

If anyone has any light to shed on this subject, please feel free to let me know. I hope the truck truely is a factory bigblock truck, but frankly if its not, I have a spare bigblock or two laying around to drop in one. But yeah it would be cool to get my hands on a true factory bigblock truck (if they really exist).. sounds like it would be a pretty rare truck.

edit: after looking at bouncytruck's link, it says no bigblocks in 69 either.... hmmm. I really trust this guy, and he knows his stuff (he amazes me on a regular basis on the stuff he knows about old cars and trucks). Maybe there was a COPO deal to put bigblocks in blazers in 69, like there was for the chevelle and camaro...?

I have to agree no big blocks in the 67-72 trucks and the 69-72 Blazers. Get some pics.

I don't know what to tell you there. I have never seen a factory BBC in the 67-72 4X4 trucks, Blazers or even the big ol' Burbs. There is nothing about BBC in a books, manuals, factory spec sheets.

I can tell you one thing tho... The dealers did add a lot of options to the trucks. From custom bumpers, tow hooks, radios, cruise control, tilt, mud flaps, etc, etc, etc. Maybe, just maybe... a dealer dropped in some 396/402 big block engines in the trucks at the dealership? If it's not on the glove box info decal, it didn't come from the factory that way. It would be nice if the guy kept all the original paper work, like window sticker, dealers packets with sales receipt and warrantee card.

I would guess that it might have been a dealer added option. The problem is, in the 4wd trucks, they put the engine in a mounting position further back to add as much length as possible to the front driveshaft. As many members who have done big block swaps have noted on the board, the valve covers hit the firewall if you keep the engine in the 4wd mounting position. A lot of guys have "massaged" the firewall with a big hammer or installed a body lift to add clearance.

Chevy did do a lot of odd things in these years, probably more so in '69 with the intro of the blazer, so anything is possible. If it is true, that is a very rare beast. There were only 4,935 blazers built in 1969, all were recorded as 4wd (no 2wd on record until 1970.)

I'd be all over the 2wd truck, and be just curious about the BBC 4X4. If he can prove the 4X4 as a real BBC go for it, otherwise stay away, unless it is cheep. Being the 4X4 might be mis-represented, I'd worry about the 2wd being a conversion (unless there is proof it is original.)

Well the thing is, Im wanting to build a big 4x4 (well fairly big ), and decided I dont want to do that work to a dodge (my soon to be sold dodge). And I already have several street machines. So Im looking for the 4x4 mainly. But yeah I love the 2x4's with a good street stance. I'll see if I can pick it up and add it to my collection of things I need to rebuild. lol

My father lives a few hours from my buddy, and where the trucks are. I sent him over this week to investigate both prospects, arrived this afternoon. Im fairly sure he and Steve spent the evening at the tavern but he's suppose to go look into the 2x4 tomorrow or monday. There are complications with the 4x4, the owner is in jail (heh), so that's a day by day thing right now.

Either way, if I dont get one (or both) of these trucks, I've decided I am getting a 67-72 blazer and when it comes to cars/trucks once I decide I want something, it doesn't seem to take long before I own it. Just a matter of finding the right one.

I'll keep you guys posted, I didn't realize the 4x4 might be something interesting (although more likely not, just a miscommunication somewhere).
