Funky noise!
Ok i have noticed a funky new noise coming from my hood. Seems like it's coming from the alternator. Sounds like bearings or a loose something over in that area. Is that a sound the alt makes or the power steering pump when they go bad? thanks fellas.

Not knowing what this noise sounds like, I would start with the possibility of one of the belts being "glazed". When the engine is running and the noise is there, spray a little WD-40 (or something like it) on the belts, if the noise goes away replace the belts. Sometimes when you get a little anti-freeze on the belts they get a glaze on them that just won't quit. If that doesn't change anything, remove one belt at a time and start it back up until the noise goes away. The process of elimination will show you whether it's the alt or p/s. The water pump can "grumble" when the bearings are on there way out also. When you have the belts off, check the water pump by wiggling the fan back and forth to see how much slop there is at the bearings, there should be little or none.

I know my alternator bearings are bad - makes a horrible screeching noise at 55 MPH and above. Sounds horrible pulling up hills, too.. metal on metal..
Good excuse to drop in a one-wire alt, though.

Alright, i found it, rotten alternator bracket was loose. Delete this thread please....
