Spark plug problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was pulling the plugs yesterday to replace them and to put on new wires. The plugs are really rusty on the outside. All of them came out without a problem, except #6!

When I backed it out, the "plug seat" came out too. It looks pretty rusty, too. Now I am wondering if I should just replace all of these, when I install new plugs. Will it be OK to reinstall this one and then new plugs?

And if you really want to help a new brother out, what is this "plug seat" actually named. I searched the manuals I have and could not get a good answer.

Are you talking about the spark plug gasket (looks like a washer)? If so the new plugs will come with them. Be sure all the old ones are removed.

UPDATE: I bet you have what are called "nonfoulers". It screws into the plug hole 1st then the plug. This is to keep oil from fouling the plugs.

I tried to post a pic. I'll try again later.

It is not the gasket. It was the metal part that the plug actually bolts into. and then this part bolts into the block. This plug and "seat" were so rusted, that it just pulled out with the plug.

Sorry my descriptions stink. Really new at all of this.

thats a "fouler"
It spaces the plugs back so oil doesnt get to them.

If the motor uses oil they will make the plugs last longer.

Thanks for the great info. I am trying to get this truck running after it sat in a pasture for 10 years or more. I assume since it had at least this one non fouler on it, that it was burning some oil.

But I am thinking that maybe I'll go without when I install new plugs and wires. I am hoping that then I can see for myself how much oil it burn and how long the plugs last. For all I know, these might be the original plugs. The truck only had 45K on it when it was put out to pasture.

I appreciate all of the help.

I made it leak A LOT worse. That is something, right?

I am just going to get a re man unit soon for it. But it was pretty cool to get inside of.

i would not reinstal the foulers.
they are a band aid.
with 45k original miles the engine shouldn't be burning oil unless it's the original oil.
once you get a few hundred miles on it, if it is burning oil,(blue smoke),while your at a steady state cruise or heavy part throttle/w.o.t. plan on a ring job.
if it just blows a bit of blue smoke on startup, it's worn valve guides.plan on a head job.
