i have a 72 and the guy i bought it from put in a 78 truck tilt column, well it was junky so i went and bought a new flaming river tilt column an exact replacement for a 72, the only problem was the new column doesnt fit into the old intermediate shaft, is it because the column that was in before is different or didnt i order the wrong column?

Pic 1 shows how the old 78 column looks, notice the spline size and length

Pic 2 shows the new flaming river column i got, see the difference?

do i need a new intermediate shaft?

It looks like you need the 72 intermediate shaft. In the picture it looks like the column is a little long so you may want to measure the shaft stickout.

Thatr's not a 78 truck column in there, that is a van unit, a truck column would have the ignition switch.
I bet the spline and size are the same, just the intermidate shaft was colapsed. Try pulling the end of the int shaft towards the firewall...I bet it moves and reaches just fine.

i dont have a pic of the exact column that was in the truck, but it is a truck column, and it does have the ignition, i just posted the pics so you could see the differences in the splines, the first one is short and has a larger circumference then the one in the 2nd pic, the second picture is the new one i just bought, which is a truck tilt as well. the shaft was not colapsed, its a stock shaft from the 78.

An original shaft for a 72 should solve the problem I would think.

OK, sorry, i was goin by the one in the pic, which after looking again, is actually a truck column.

I was a little confused also, but figured the first picture was the one to look at and the shaft looks larger than the 72 shaft.

Nice collection of columns!
