holley carburetor help
yeah my truck died on the way to school this morning. took some real trying to get it restarted and now i checked it out... it barely idles well actualy it wont stay at an idle for more than a second or 2... and gas comes out of a hole that stands up in front of the choke area when it almost dies... its getting all over my polished aluminum intake and pissing me off. its a 600 cfm electric choke. does anyoen know why the gas is coming out of this hole and why it wont idle and keeps stumbling and missing? its a fairly new carburetor and hasnt given me hardly any problems up till now

Sounds like a stuck float/needle/seat. I had an old Holley that used to do that from time to time. I used to carry a screwdriver with me so when it would I'd just get out and give it a few "taps" on the front fuel bowl and it'd be ok til next time... One of the few reasons I quit using Holley carbs.
I still have an old 600cfm Vacuum secondary sq. bore in the garage.. for old times sake. |

Sounds like your float level is too high and flooding out the motor. Remove the screw on the front bowl (pass side) and see if fuel comes out. The set level should be right below the hole.

That's one of the reasons I gave my Holley away and put on an Edelbrock. Haven't had a problem since. I found it frustrating to have to adjust the carb everytime I wanted to use the car it was on.

I have had several Holley's and have had this same problem with them all(and yes I know how to adjust the floats). I stuck a 600 Edelbrock on my 350 adjusted the idle and never looked back! |

Both brands have strengths and weaknesses. If Holley's were so bad, NASCAR and NHRA wouldn't require them.

NASCAR has LOTS of fulltime mechanics, I'm just part time hobbiest. I'm sure lots of people like Holleys, I don't. I got talked in to that one, found they haven't changed from the old days. Also, have too many witnesses who laughingly tell the stories of all my Holley problems. They still laugh about it, and that was over 10 years ago.
