wierd oil filter
I started to change my oil today in the '69 but couldnt finish because I realized that I had the wrong oil filter, I have never changed the oil in the truck myself because my best buddy worked at a shell rapid lube and we would trade trucks for the day and they would do all of the fluids. Anyways I went to Autozone and purchased a Ph30 oil filter (what thier computers said fit) for my 1968 327 out of an impala. Well that filter is the usual "spin-on" type filter where the casing and the filter are all one unit. Well I get under the truck I relize that my filter is seperate from the canister, almost like the filter sits inside a cup. I have looked the engine up online and they keep saying that the PH30 should fit the motor! whats wrong here?????? And also is there any really big difference between these two styles of filters and their ability to filter the oil? is there a conversion to go to the "spin-on" filters?
Thanks

Sounds like you have the "older" canister type oil filter(see attached). The '68 Impala I drove in HS had a 327 with a canister filter. They do(or used to.. ) make a conversion for it. I believe NAPA has the conversion kit or can get it. It's pretty simple to change over which makes easier to get replacement filters...

My truck has the canister filter. I never had a problem finding replacements for it at the local Napa, either. My dad was happy when he saw it on my truck, he thinks they are way better than the screw on type. Doesn't really matter to me.

cool I'll take the filter in tomorrow and see what the price difference is for the filter, and then for the conversion.

Somewhere I've heard that canister filters are better than spin-on. I'd stay with canister if you don't mind the hassle of procuring them and the added mess of changing them.

My 69 SWB with 307 had the cartridge filter. One of the quick oil change places recommended that I change to the spin on and they had the conversion kit and did it for me.

When did they change over to the spin-on type? I have a '68 327 awaiting rebuild and it has the cannister type. I think I'll keep it, 'cause I want to stay as original as possible.

Well I should have put this in my earlier post, but (duh) I forgot. When I decoded my engine block it turned out to be non-original, and came out to be either a '73 or '74 school bus chassis, and it has the canister type.

I'm not sure of the exact transition but many if not most 68 SB trucks were canister while the cars had made the transition to spin-on. I'm not sure about BB trucks.
My truck had the canister. I've converted to spin-on for the time being but plan on converting back now that I've found a good NOS oil pressure bypass assembly to replace my cracked original one. Some police package cars or "extreme duty" cars could be ordered with canister in 68 and perhaps later years. I'm not sure.

My brother bought his 69 c 10 from the original owner and it had this type of oil filter on the 307 v-8.

I have a canister filter. The lube places will change the filter as long as you bring one in.

I have a canister filter. NAPA and Discount auto sell the cartridges. My 69, 71, and 72 all had spin on filters.
